Man of the tournament

International England

Perhaps now is the time to ask who is the man of the tournament. For me, the top five contenders are:

Andrew Sheridan (Eng)
John Smit (SA)
Shalk Burger (SA)
Brian Habana (SA)
Victor Matield (SA)

Personally, I'd go for Burger as, aside from his ban (which i thought rather harsh), he's consistently been a thorn in the side of every team he's played against with his all round workrate, solid defense and support in attack, and has underlined his position as best back row in the world.

Habana is the obvious choice

but notable mentions should also go to Matfield, Sheridan and Hernandez.

Monty and Paterson should also be mentioned for their kicking.

Worst player was Brain Lima or Ronan O'Gara

I would say Bryan Habana played well and was outstanding for South Africa. He deserves to be the player of the tournament.

jaun smit was immense at the breakdown and gained so much turnover ball, but juan martin hernandez has got to do it for me. A relatively average player who is played out of position at stade francais each week is surely on his way to bigger and better things after the awesome performances he put in over the last few weeks

Forwards NEVER get the credit the glamour boys in the backs get, just because the work they do is less obvious to the naked eye.

The player of the tournament
V Matfield- a lineout enforcer and great physical athleticism and reading of the game.
The player of the year
B Habana- but that american winger takes THE BEST INDIVIDUAL TRY of the year!

Runners Up:
Sheridan, Smit, Hernadez,
Promising Youngsters :
Tait V Steyn- Bring on Lions tour 2009!!!!!!!!!!!

John Smit was an outstanding captain and refereed the final brilliantly, but player of the tournament? Not convinced.
The voices in my head are still chanting the name of Du Preez...

how can u put McCaw in team of the tournament SwannyWilkinson when against the only real opposition the all blacks faced, France, he was anonymous. Dousatoir played him off the park. i thought performance of the world cup should go to Dousatoir against NZ. his hit on Collins was inspirational and he turned over ball, gained yards carrying the ball and scored a try. Frances performance changed the face of the world cup and Dousatoir was central to it, he was my man of the world cup

Best player in the world cup goes to Juan Martin Hernandez. Against South Africa in the semi-final he was poor, along with the rest of the Argentinian team, but he brought the spark to every other match which was lacking in most of them. He is a player whom I love to watch playing, everything just looks elegant and effortless. He was sublime in the 3rd/4th Place Playoff, and perfect for most of the group stages. His kicking in the quarter final also kept Scotland from ever really being in the game. I was lucky enough to watch him playing for Stade Francais at the Stade de France a few times last season as well; what a player!
