The booing of Frank Lampard

Premier League England
comment on the article

As we have all just heard when Frank Lampard came on this afternoon he got a very mixed reaction from the crowd including a large amount of booing. Why does he get that reaction?

Typically a player is booed for a specific faux-pas e.g. Bentley not playing for the under 21's. Frank has done no such thing. He has contributed to England's cause for 5 years well, has scored a creditable amount of goals and always given 100%.

In my opinion he was booed not because of who he is but what he represents. He represents a weakness by England managers for picking names rather than teams.

There must be a million threads on 606 about how the England midfield doesn't function with Gerrard and Lampard. They hamper each others games to such an extent that neither performs to their peak. England fans are sick of seeing a star studded team fail because of a lack of balance and a coherent system. Over the last couple of months we have been shown (via the introduction of Barry) how good we can be. England fans enjoy seeing us win and win well.

Therefore the introduction of Lampard today was associated with unfulfilled potential and a return to the darker days of star power and that is why people booed his introduction. They weren't booing him, they were booing the backwards step it represented by Mclaren.

Am I the only one who doesn't think Frank is particluarly plump ?

It may be because I'm a rather sexy 17stoner meself, but he's hardly a Molby...

That said, he's nowhere near as good as Jan was. Maybe a few more pies might help...

When an England fan has paid for a ticket to watch the game, they have the right to express their opinion. It's comes with the price of entry!!

The vast majority of 85,000 fans can't be all wrong - he doesn't deserve his place in the team at the moment, but like always is playing because of his name and club!

Lampard shouldn't play for his country, when all HE wants to do is, do his best and play his heart out. He plays week in week out for Chelsea and we're expected to see him do the same for England. He has different players around him with the England team. He STILL does well though, he's been there for England. Scored some crucial goals but the fans seem to forget that. Euro 2004? France? Portugal? Where were the rest of them?

We're killing a fabulous talent and player here. Maybe Frank is too 'nice'. He doesn't deserve any of it. He doesn't have to prove anything. He's been the major driving force in a Chelsea team dominated by superstars, over the past few years. Chelsea without Lampard, they struggle to score and are generally predictable. You check how many games Chelsea have dropped points over the past few years. I guarantee that Lampard wasn't playing.

Then again, we can't say ALL the England fans boo him. It's the minority. Minorities don't matter anyway. I'm sure the proper, genuine English fans are 110% behind him. I'm a Blackburn fan before anyone starts jumping on my back thinking I'm Chelsea lol.

All great players bounce back, Lampard will be back and shut up the boo boys once and for all.

England lose one game and Lampard doesn't play, we call for Lampard back. How narrow minded are some 'supporters'?

Get real.

What a poor sensitive soul the media must think Frank and the rest of the England team are, Quite frankly after that performance the whole team should have been booed, those supporters have paid for a ticket which gives them the right to express an opinion, England should have had a cricket score against such weak opponents without stepping out of second gear, instead they decided the were above entertaining the audience and without the help of Estonia it would have been a draw. I'd like to ask McClaren this "IF YOU WENT TO SEE A TOP WEST END SHOW BUT THE CAST DECIDED THEY WOULD PERFORM LIKE A VILLAGE AMATURE DRAMATIC SOCIETY BECAUSE THEY HAD ANOTHER SHOW 4 DAYS LATER, WOULD YOU WANT TO EXPRESS AN OPINION"

Frank Lampard is just World Class and people boo him because theyre jelous. He is better than Barry and Gerrard put together so i cant see why peoplr boo him ! Im sure in Euro 08 McClaren pics the right team and plays Lamps and Essien together in the centre.

Oh dear...poor pampered multi-millionaires..
The rugby boys have took a lot more stick and look where they are now. Maybe Jonny should come over and give a motivational speech. If Lampard and the rest of the over-paid under-talented Wendyballers dont want to listen they could always send their butlers along.

I agree confiseur you are probably speaking for the majority of the country.

as a patriot you should always support your country, however, in my opinion by booing this particular 'player' it seems to be aimed at the management (pathetic, name obsessed individuals, usually) more than the player and seems the best way of removing a major stumbling block in Englands aim to achieve again......

agree? disagree?

Please enlighten me on how McClaren will manage to get Essien on the pitch?

It's a shame he's booed but I think it is more exasperation with McLaren. He persists on playing the 'stars' irrespective on how they gel together. It's ok to indulge this at club level where sides are built around key players. Gerard, Lampard, Rooney and Owen are all key players at their clubs. However at England level, they need to play as a team and rarely do. Gareth Barry fits in, does what he is told and compliments Gerard. Lampard swans around, gets in Gerards way and has the occassional shot from beyond the penalty box. It just doesn't work and you'd have thought McLaren would know this by now.
