Knight85 (U6813568) posted Oct 11, 2007 Yep the Ref cost you the game. He missed a 7 point converted try. Since you were expecting to win by more than 20 points you will excuse me if I call you on this.

nowaytommy (U9390568) posted Oct 14, 2007 Coming back to this thread i still can't believe folks are going on about the refs. Rugby rules are a nightmare. You see mauls being pulled down all the time... You see players coming in from the side all the time... You see players diving in over the top to form rucks all the time...You see high tackles all the time... I could go on and on and on. Sometimes refs give it sometimes they don't. If your lucky to have Johnny on your team it's great if you get the decisions. That's how close these matches are. It can be a bit of a lottery unfortunately. The nature of rugby's rules can be very convoluted leading to massive inconsistency thus leading to huge advantage or disadvantage.

realfootyfan15 (U10153446) posted Oct 25, 2007 Hi Folks, first timer here and I'm pleased to see the conversation on the ABs. I'm a real fan of this team but feel that a balanced view is appropriate. It is unfair to need a 7-10 point buffer against referee failures and there were definitely failures as mentioned above (forward pass etc.). But even so, other teams have this too and it all balances out. In 1995, James Small (SA) and Jonah Lomu (NZ) both had their try attempts ruled forward as they received such a pass, in the same game (the final). So consistency is definintely an issue and rules are rules. But this still doesn't take away from the fact that the ABs had the opportunity to win the game by making a tactical decision whilst camped on the French 10 meter line for about 5 minutes - a drop goal! Had Luke McAllister (the current fly half) made the call about 5-6 mins from the end, which I believe should have been made, the ABs could easily have won. If the kick missed they could have had another chance with a couple more minutes to spare, instead of waiting for the last few seconds from about 45 meters out. So in the end, the ABs lost the game fair and square. But again, rules are rules and the IRB have a lot to answer for when it comes to supporting a system that can not eliminate inconsistencies. A lot rides on such results and they have duty to invest in making their staff do a better job, for all teams and spectators, not just the ABs. Comment on this article
