Henry suffers for Kiwi failure

Rugby world cup New Zealand
comment on the article

New Zealand rugby chiefs have announced they will appoint a new coach to replace Graham Henry by Christmas.

The unsuccessful Lions boss oversaw the All Blacks' worst-ever World Cup campaign by failing to reach the semi-finals following the shock 20-18 defeat by France in Cardiff on Saturday night.

The Kiwis have long been branded "World Cup" chokers by the rest of the world for having gone into every tournament as favourites, only to mess up along the way, bar the inuagural event in 1987.

For just as long, they have been in denial about it. Back in August, I interviewed All Blacks legend Sean Fitzpatrick and he looked at me apoplectically when I mentioned this tag.

In the bars of Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, the Kiwis joined in en masse to taunt the Australians after their defeat by England.

"Four more years" they cried, in reference to some infamous sledging in their direction from Aussie skipper George Gregan.

Henry was supposed to be the man to restore officially the pride of All Blacks rugby and many thought they only had to turn up.

But now the New Zealand nation face four more years of hurt - and some of the Kiwis I met in Cardiff, four years of clawing back the vast sums of cash lumped on this trip.

And for this Henry has paid the price with his job.

We all accept in sport that results hinge on fine margins. And just to play devil's advocate, you could say that one unspotted French forward pass has cost a man his career, reputation and dreams.

But I suspect there won't be too many Kiwis who are sad to see the back of Graham Henry.

poorloser,

Reason for the lack of penalties to NZ was that they had most (70%+) of the posession. In addition, the French game plan must have been along the lines of pressurising NZ into infringing, as they thought they had little other chance. I finally saw the forward pass the other night, but it is tricky to spot and is assentuated by the tackle being put in on Traille. The ref was directly behind, which would rule him out of spotting it and the linesman should have picked it up, though was also marginally behind as well. I thought that McAlister dropping for Wilkson style glory in the last minute was a little desperate - moves like this should be bread and butter stuff for the All Blacks, but they seem to have only practised passing, lines and the quick offload.

Poor loser

The All Blacks are allowed to get pinged for regular infringements, just when they play in the tri nations, they don't. When they play in un important summer / autumn international matches they don't, doesn't mean they shouldn't.

Your stats about 55% of NZ thinking it was down to poor refereeing? That counts as you are so knowledgeable? Give me a break! Could you not all just be a nation of biased whingers?

Watch the game again without your silver fern tinted spectacles on and you will watch a different game to the one you have apparently already seen.

I think some one else mentioned that the referee was not impartial as he was English and they would be playing the AB's in the next game? This is an international referee, so again, just face the fact you lost fair and square. Would you have preferred a SH referee perhaps? People have different interpretations of who is fairest. I remember a game about 4 years ago involving a South African referee that seemed to make what would have been a very one sided game close. However, the team that won had a little more invention and nouse to actually prove that they were the best team in the world and claim that "little yellow cup".

The reason why everyone seems to be against you is your constant moaning. We love to beat the aussies, but they came out and said "you out played us, we don't like it, but you did". So after the expected horrahing after a big victory over the old enemy, we have now shut up. I suggest you do the same and start planning - see you in 4 years time?

Yep the Ref cost you the game. He missed a 7 point converted try. Since you were expecting to win by more than 20 points you will excuse me if I call you on this.

The Ref wasn't great, but I can see why the forward pass was missed it isn't easy reffing games. However what really cost you the games was just playing boring tactic deviod Rugby. You cannot just expect to punch a hole through someone with continual crash and drives because you are the all blacks.

May I also add my name to the people who actually don't care that the Ref got the call wrong (other than it damages the name of Rugby) because in the past I have seen NZ get away with murder against other sides. See you next time guys.

Yes everything in the Northern Hemishere is inferior? We did invent the old game you know why not be glad we gave you the game in the first place lol ( only tongue in cheek)

Seriuosly though For a nation that says the Poms whinge, this takes the biscuit. You guys lost , fair and square.

Another thing, why do you guys always mock anyone who complains about referees and dirty play when its the ABs who are guilty ? If it were an even handed dislike of unfairness I wouldn't mind, but Kiwi players always play on the edge of the rules, and are lucky to get away with it. This time you were caught out and sin binned. Well why not play within the rules?

The referee cannot I repeat, cannot rule forward pass, unless he is parallel to the pass when it is passed. it is a linesman that it there for that reason. Shows how emotional this issue is, when simple laws are not understood by the ABs Supporters.

No its another mistake the NZRFU are gonna make.GH should definitely stay.It took SCW 2 attempts before he made it.
By the way if any non kiwi posters here wish to get an analysis of Wyane Barnes from a Top refs point of view,Check it out at www.nzherald.co.nz.
The AB supporters have a right to feel hard done by.Barnes had an "adequate" game and the decisions he made most likely did affect the outcome of the game. And TMO (The Match Officials for clarification) did NOT do their job either. The forward pass SHOULD have been ruled over by them.I can see this debate continuing well into the next few years.

Philsterboy, you're right. It'll last at least 4 more years, until the Kiwis bottle it again, then they'll find something else to whinge on and on and on and on and on and....

Barnes missed a French forward pass - so what? SH refs have forgotten what the rule means, unless it goes against their unbeatable bottlers.

Barnes missed other vital things as well, such as Carter's forward pass to McAllister, a knock on in the run up to the final Kiwi try, McCall infringing in rucks, etc.

Note to Kiwi whingers: Try to be balanced in your criticism, maybe someone will give a damn what you think then!

Coming back to this thread i still can't believe folks are going on about the refs. Rugby rules are a nightmare. You see mauls being pulled down all the time... You see players coming in from the side all the time... You see players diving in over the top to form rucks all the time...You see high tackles all the time... I could go on and on and on. Sometimes refs give it sometimes they don't. If your lucky to have Johnny on your team it's great if you get the decisions. That's how close these matches are. It can be a bit of a lottery unfortunately. The nature of rugby's rules can be very convoluted leading to massive inconsistency thus leading to huge advantage or disadvantage.

I do agree, Referees have a onerous task, no thanks from anybody.

But today the NZ refereee is having a shocker.

Hi Folks, first timer here and I'm pleased to see the conversation on the ABs. I'm a real fan of this team but feel that a balanced view is appropriate. It is unfair to need a 7-10 point buffer against referee failures and there were definitely failures as mentioned above (forward pass etc.). But even so, other teams have this too and it all balances out. In 1995, James Small (SA) and Jonah Lomu (NZ) both had their try attempts ruled forward as they received such a pass, in the same game (the final). So consistency is definintely an issue and rules are rules. But this still doesn't take away from the fact that the ABs had the opportunity to win the game by making a tactical decision whilst camped on the French 10 meter line for about 5 minutes - a drop goal! Had Luke McAllister (the current fly half) made the call about 5-6 mins from the end, which I believe should have been made, the ABs could easily have won. If the kick missed they could have had another chance with a couple more minutes to spare, instead of waiting for the last few seconds from about 45 meters out. So in the end, the ABs lost the game fair and square. But again, rules are rules and the IRB have a lot to answer for when it comes to supporting a system that can not eliminate inconsistencies. A lot rides on such results and they have duty to invest in making their staff do a better job, for all teams and spectators, not just the ABs.
