Football Focus Survey

Premier League Arsenal

As a professional researcher / survey designer, I took a fair bit of interest in the Football Focus Survey. And my first thought is that the questions are incredibly leading. This is the arch crime in survey design, as it leads to a result that is not necessarily reflective of people's real opinions.

Take for example "Do you think your national team is suffering because of the number of foreign players in the Premier League? ". This necessarily leads people to thinking about the question of foreign players in a negative way. The question could have been phrased in a host of different ways - i.e. a positive lead "Have foreign players had a positive impact on the standard of football in the Premiership?". But for proper research purposes the question should aim for neutrality i.e. "Would you say that foreign players have had a generally positive impact on the British game, generally negative impact, or have had a neutral impact?"

It is quite annoying

The problem affecting the national team is not as a result of foreign players. If the local players are doing well, i am sure many clubs would come calling for them. We must not forget also that foreign players bring attraction to the league. I am afraid, the league could lost it´s attraction in other parts of the world. Or was it the same foreign players that caused our underperformance in world cup? All these are excuses. How many english players can dribble like Cristaino Ronaldo? All they play is ´´ GIVE ME I SHOOT FOOTBALL¨

Too many foreign players are undoubtedly bad for the English game. I do not object to genuine world class players treading our hallowed turfs, but am tired of seeing second class imports restrict the opportunity of young English talent more than up to the job. How anyone can praise Arsene Wenger is beyond me. His teams may play pretty football, but his foreign poilcy and abhorrence of English footballers per say is completely rancid. It really wrankles me when commentators refer to Arsenal as being British; the club may be but the team most certainly are not. I cannot bring myself to watch Arsenal nowadays. I will them to lose week in and week out, whether at home or in Europe. Introduce quotas immediately, I say, and give English youth the chance to flourish.

If you want to watch English football, watch and English football team.
If you want to watch Englishmen playing football, watch an England Match.
Teams should not more have to play English players than any other firm or club should have to buy English food, kit or any other supply.

there should be no foreign players whatsoever in the premier league.

I can't see the point in having junior player academies as clubs do, only to lose the talent elsewhere or to ignore it because of foreigners!

Whilst I agree with your basic argument about survey construction, my way of wording questions would be totally neutral.

What has the impact of foreign players in the leagues been on the National team?
Positive
Negative

Has the selection of the National team been impacted by the media?
Yes
No

and so on.

Why would anyone think that Football fans are intelligent enough to decide the shape of the game. And since when are EU nationals foreigners when in the EU? If tickets are too expensive don't go to the stadium. This survey like many others only serves to prove how easily people are brain washed into believing ideas that have no merit whatsoever.

Many (football fans) might think you have been "brain washed into believing ideas that have no merit whatsoever".

walcot etc...
so, you think, by turning up to a footy match, you're deciding the future shape of the game? and if all the fans who fancies going turned up on the same day, how do you think they'd all get in?
you idiots who waste your money every week at football matches really think you're so superior in every way, don't you? you think you have more right to have your voice heard, you think you understand the game better...you just think you're so special, don't you?
well you're not-you're stupid!

Wenger builds stars from raw talent. The truth we all should address is the English players are so expensive, so economically which one is better, go buy an African talent very cheap or break ur bank to get an untested English player. Remember Walcot

It is difficult the only thing i can suggest is that every team needs to have a certain ammount of english players PLAYING in the first team. It does get a bit silly i mean look at the likes of arsenal and chelsea befoe the big spending spree. Im a united fan and as much as we have bought foreigners in the past we have bought english as well as bringing some amazing talent through the ranks in past years. I mean look at the team of 99 we had, the two nevilles, scholes, beckham, sherringham, andy cole, butt just to name a few. I dont think we need to address the foreign problem we need to look at the english player problem. Its great saying there are too many foreigners but thats only because the standard of our english talent is very low. I mean if we were that good then we would still be in the euros. Its not all to do with macc the players were awful to and the worrying thing for England is that we dont really have anyone to succeed the likes of gerrard, lampard beckham in my opinion.
