Owen picked for England??

International Newcastle United

I'm getting really sick of Owen being rushed back into international duty days after recovering from another injury. Surely he should be rested for these internationals rather than risk another injury and him missing more Newcastle games? Does it not annoy anyone else that he seems to be fit for more England matches than Newcastle matches??

Being a non-English Tooner (I'm Welsh) it really annoys me - especially given that the serious shortage of English players of international pedigree is down to the FA's short sightedness with regards to not limiting the influx of foreign players years ago. If regulations limiting the number of foreigners allowed in the first team were in place then surely more quality English players would have come through by now and teams like Newcastle wouldn't be forced into rushing star players back to play for a national side with very few quality footballers. This has happened to Owen a few times now and what is the end result?? Newcastle squeeze a few games out of a tired footballer who hasn't had sufficient recovery time which leads to another injury and more missed games for Newcastle. Let's face it, he looked tired and less than sharp after playing the last two England games and ended up in surgery soon afterwards.

Do I have a point? Or am I about to be shot down by angry English football fans..? I'd love to hear what other people think!

Good points, Moody.
Interesting how few UK players (with a few notable exceptions like John Charles and John Charles) have made a success of playing abroard.
Perhaps a few more will try it in the future (if / when the Premiership bubble bursts and earnings abroad match / exceed those here)?

Err you forgot about John Charles winkeye

I don't think we'll ever have more than a handful go abroad at any time.

It's more than just money as well. Family is a big factor and although we brits now travel abroad much more, I think this is still quite an insular island nation.

...unless of course they can all play for Benidorm-expats Utd winkeye

VDS playing for Fulham doesn't make him any less of a keeper.
shows he has a good eye for a side thats on the up (as fulham were when he joined them).

Being and English Toon fan i do see the need for Owen in the England squad, however i do feel that he should be rested for piss poor sides such as Estonia... we should allow other strikers to play against them while Owen recovers... we beat Russia with ease with the help of Owen, however the whole team played well that day and Owen had the right finishing touches, i do believe that Rooney and Crouch possibly Defoe could do the job whilst Owen recovers, i dont see the need for him to play against these sides, but he is a quality players and both Big Sam and Steve McLaren will want him in their squad, he is dedicated to Newcastle though and wants to score goals for us which is a good thing xxx

Owen playing and scoring the winner today for Newcastle just shows what a complete load of rubbish this thread was in the first place.

Michael Owen's a national treasure and should be used as such i.e. when it really counts. He should be given time to recover then maybe he can be back to his best by Euro 2008 kick-off.Teams like Estonia should provide an opportunity for the manager to try out other attacking options and partnerships so the national team isn't found wanting the next time there's an injury crisis.

is anyone else aware that Carlo Cudicini qualifies for the England team.

He has a british passport and has not plyed in the senior competetive ranks for his native Italy?

If this is true then Robinson should be dropped with immediate effect.
