Wales new coach

Wales

Even though i am an English man i have great respect for your great country and was sad to see you exit the World Cup on Saturday.

This is not a wind up but i honestly enjoy watching Wales play as you always entertain, win or lose, and it is a shame you are not in the last eight. Saturday was probably the best game of rugby i have seen in my life, and some of the attacking rugby you produced was scintillating (wish England could produce rugby like that).

I write this article to ask your views on who you think should be your next coach? Do you want another Welshman? Or don't you care as long as he is the best man?

I was watching South Africa vs USA last night, and Sean Fitzpatrick said that Robbie Deans could be an option and that he is keen to try international rugby again, and has done a good job with the All Blacks in the past and is currently doing a good job with the Crusaders.

Personally i think you should appoint a foreigner, as looking at the coaches of the regional teams, i don't think they are any better than Jenkins to be honest, Lyn Jones is the most successful in terms of silverware, but would he be a popular choice? Probably not.

The problem with appointing a top class foreign coach could be his salary. Are the WRU in a position to go out and get the best coach and pay him whatever it takes? Again probably not, which could lead to someone like Phil Davies getting the job.

Anyway, all the best with your search and i hope you appoint the right man, as the rugby world needs a strong Wales.

Any comments?

i work in the schools rugby area and money is best invested at jnr club rugby where there are qualifed coaches with gradual progression through the agegroups ,as in schools you dont have to a qualifed coach not even a PE teacher but know the game and your the coach ..most of the time the closest these guys have come to coaching is on a games console .where in clubs it is now against the wru guidlines for coaches not to be qualified and the stucture for jnr and progression via district and regional teams is excellent my son is nine and very talented and all ready being watched and advised by the regional development officers and encouraged to enjoy first and develop second

Steve the osprey you are totally right-my wife (recently a PE cordinator at a primary school)had to teach rugby skills etc (she has never played the game). However, schools must be the first place to act-get proper coaches to with the sole job of teaching rugby in the schools in an area. Unfortunately not all kids have access to rugby clubs for numerous reasons but most kids will attend school. In places like Australia I don't think you'd find the RE teacher popping out to teach ozzie rules at lunchtime. Hope your son pulls on the red jersey one day.

Deans is the best coach in the world and if NZ
don't take him after the World Cup, Australia
will. His teams play the exciting brand of rugby, win or lose, that fans of the game want to see. I'm keen to see the end of old coaches like Connolly, Henry, Jones. They don't enhance the game. I prefer a great game regardless of who wins.

Any chance Eddie O'Sullivan could be persuaded to take the job. I don't think his current employers would mind.

I am very interested to see who turns up as caretaker coach for the SA game later in the year. I would hope they will give one of the regional coaches a shot at it. It seems to me that it would be an excellent experience for someone like Phil Davies or Dai Young to get a chance to taste life in the goldfish bowl. I'm convinced that DY is being groomed by the WRU for the job later in his career and PD will be a contender one day.

with his track record at the blues eg won nothing, never made it out of the group stages of the HC then young has no business being anywhere near the test team , however i think your right and the wru see him as a future coach

frankly phil davies and turner are miles ahead of him and although im no fan of lyn jones he has at least won the magners lge twice any of those are better than dai young, i reckon well see someone like dai rees in charge for the sa game

PontyPandyAllstar

Mate, you clearly know nothing about Rugby.

How long do you think it takes to build a RWC squad? How long has it taken successive All Blacks coaches? How long has it taken Jake White to build a squad that can realistically challenge?

You might also like to get your head out of The Western Mail occasionally. Then you might read articles by players like Fitzpatrick who points to current AB success being built on them going back to basic forward play having learnt lessons from England’s ’03 campaign.

You might also like to check a few facts and stats along the way also – like how many touring teams from the NH have actually won games in NZ – ever?

You might also like to have another look at the two England wins just prior to the ’03 cup win. One a single try forward battle in a wet and windy Wellington; a week later a 3 try to 1 backs rout of the Ozzies on a fast dry track under the roof in Melbourne. You see Ponty, it takes a good set of forwards, a good set of backs, an adaptable game plan and a good goal kicker to win a RWC. Not rocket science is it. Seems it’s not “The Welsh Way” either.

Nothing quite so funny as yet another Welsh rugby expert calling a RWC winning coach who produced a team that dominated world rugby for the best part of four years an idiot. Why do people like you never see the irony?

I think Deans woudl be a good choice, Wales has always played with flair, and do like running the ball so bringing in a coach that has experience coaching a team like that would be the best option, and lets face it the Crusaders are 1 of the most feared teams in Super14 for that exact reason.

I think any coach that is considering the job would ask for a long contract and if not WRU should make it a good length of time, just look how it worked for us (SA), before JW we also change coaches every year or so.

I really hope wales can come back from there dissapointing WC and possibly win the 6 nations, if Scotland dont do it that is....
