With a 16 yard toss to Greg Jennings, Brett Favre is in the record books - 421 touchdown passes. Even the Vikings fans stood up and applauded him. What an achievement.

i agree, favre has always played with a huge grin on his face and i dont know if i've EVER heard anyone say a bad word against him-even on opposing sides. his No.4 shirt was one of the very first shirts i ever bought-and i'm a cowboys fan.
(and a young kid from wisconsin who grew up idolising him is now our QB-Romo is JUST like him!)
manning is nice enough but isnt in favre's league of personality.

how he has managed to last all these years in the brutal world of the NFL deserves an award on its own

Cheeseheads for the Superbowl to top it off..

Since the start of Favre's career (he became a starter in 1992 - nine years into Marino's career) rules on pass interference have been strengthened to favour receivers while rules on roughing the passer have made it far harder to intimidate quarterbacks.

I'm not trying to degrade Favre's achievement but it was harder to complete passes back then, partly because the receivers were more likely to have been knocked down.

What makes Favre's achievements so great compared to Marino is how bad he was to start with.

He was wild and began his career throwing more interceptions than touchdowns.

But like Marino he was a pure passer and once he made sensible decisions he became a real force and gained the ring that Marino never got.

Congratulations to one of the great Quarterbacks.

Those rule changes lead to more pass interference calls which are not added to the QB's or WR's numbers, they are just penalty yardage against the defense, infact they tend to hurt as a pass interference call near the endzone takes a TD pass away from the QB and makes it a TD rush for a RB.

Marino was great, favre is great, both played in a pass happy league. Both were on teams lacking big time talent, both did something completely amazing. On top of that the stricter rules were not truely enforced until after the first Patriots Super Bowl win (2001) when the Colts complained to the competition commity. Which is well after Brett Favres best years. Both are great and the league has been pass happy for 3 decades now, niether had a major advantage over the other.

Anyone else feel Favre's celebration was a bit OTT? Sure, its a good record, but i dont recall LaDainian Tomlinson running around like a loony when he got the record for touchdowns in a season - rather, he thanked his line-men. Makes me think that Favre has only been playing for the last couple of years in just so he can break that record. He probs would have retired before this season if he broke it last year.

I should also add, that MArino played his entire career in a league where the reciever could push off the defender to get a bigger seperation which would neglate any difference that the rule change might have.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'll just add that I was a massive fan of Marino and just wish Favre could have had Wide Receivers of the same consistancy as the Dolphins had in the 80's - his stats might have been out of sight by now.

If you want a laugh, have a look at Keith Webster's look at QB stats down through the years (http://www.nfluk.com/features-display.php?id=2632) - just proves that you can argue anything with stats, but we're not going to...

As a 49ers fan, Brett Favre ranks fairly high on my list of QBs I'd like to see take a very hefty sack on every play (along with Troy Aikman and Phil Simms).

However, the guy is class and has never been about the numbers. He had every right to a celebration when breaking Marino's record - it's a helluva accomplishment.

LT breaking Shaun Alexander's season TD record, for me, is a long way down the list of accomplishments - it's not a very old record for a start!

Well done Brett - in an age when sportsmen from all corners of the world are becoming more like machines (step forward Manning and Brady) it's nice to still have an individual around.
