County cricket Surrey

With Saqlain given permission to leave Sussex this could open the door for a return for him to the brit oval.Last season he averaged 16.78 in first class cricket and by signing him as a non overseas player (which we can do) we could then sign Matt Nicholson again this year and still have 2 quality spinners plus youngsters like Simon king. I have a slight feeling that the club might make Scott Newman vice-captain next year as now he has established himself in the one day team he is in that age group were he isn't old but also not young anymore he also looks to be involved a lot more in team decisions from what i could see at recent games and especially the lancashire game.

Any thoughts

Schofield is a much better prospect now he has regained form.

Now thats funny schofield has neaver been any good at all,why is it the english always think a spinner even if he is rubbish is something when he is clearly not!

How can you compare saqlain to schofield when saq is a proven match winner??? well???

Because the English national team selectors always focus on Surrey, I reckon Saqlain will get a call up sooner rather than later

Surrey have taken a massive gamble on the fitness of Saqlain Mushtaq. It remains to be seen whether he can repeat the form of old.

Does this mean Mortaza is leaving?

I see Surrey are after Mohammad Asif as overseas player and are also after Matt Nicholson and Pedro Collins on Kolpak deals.

I am surprised Surrey haven't released more players! I thought Brown, Ormond and Akram would have been released.

I also expect Clarke to leave Surrey.

Rikki Clarke - 368 runs at an average of 23 and going for 42 a wicket in the County Championship is hardly setting the world alight.

The one player Surrey can't do without is Mark Ramprakash - you should pray he keeps playing. Without him you'd be playing in the second division next year

On the subject of Saqlain.. if he's fit he will be a more than useful player. 18 wickets at 17.55 last year shows he may still have something to offer - and the fact that he's got a British passport, and not counted as an overseas player, is an added bonus.

It's a no-lose situation for Surrey !

My main misgiving over Saqlain is his fitness. He was practically forced to retire a few years back, then in his last brief spell with Surrey a couple of years ago he looked overweight and unfit. (In his prime he always looked very slim and agile.)

Murtaza Hussain looked useful in the last couple of Championship game, and though two years older I can't help wondering whether he might be a bettr bet. I'm not totally surprised - as soon as I saw Saqlain had been released from hs Sussex contract I wondered whether he might be on his way back to the Oval.

There is plenty of scope for a wholesale change of staff. Salisbury, Brown and Akram (plus Doshi) all slipped off the radar in the successful second half of last season; Ormond ws so embarrassingly out of shape I can't see him geting offered another contract. (Not sure whether he's under contract for next season already.

Nicholson was excellent and very consistent. Reminds me a lot of Andrew Cadick in style and stature. The ideal overseas player as he's no longer under consideration for international cricket; if he's reclassified, great. Mohammad Asif would be a superb signing, he really impressed me at Leics a couple of seasons back, and even more so in the Test series for pakistan last year.

I'd be sorry to see Clarke leave, a real unfulfilled talent and one of the best three fielders available to England, although we coped well without him during the storming finish of five wins and four draws from the last nine Championship games.

Saqlain was a key player for Pakistan and I saw him on ground in the last test match he played for Pakistan against India at Multan. At that time he was not proving effective on purely a batting wicket. Now I wish him all the success for his new job as well as for England and belive that he can still bring his team on top of the table. Best of Luck Saqiiii...

just found out that we have signed pedro collins. with one world class quick we will hopefully be adding 2 more in nicholson and asif (nicho as kolpak and asif as overseas) if the asif deal falls through would just sign nicho as a overseas as i am against kolpak so is al butcher by listening to him on surrey tv but he claims we have been kind of forced into signing him because of lack of english talent and the way other counties use them
