USA v England

Womens World Cup England

comment on the article

England face the United States in the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup on Saturday.

The US beat Nigeria 1-0, courtesy of a first-minute goal from Lori Chalupny, to top Group B and set up the showdown.

The States are one of the best teams in the world - do you think Hope Powell's side have what it takes to beat them?

Give your thoughts as the match progresses.

Not at all! I live in the USA and thought England played well, especially at the back and in midfield. The difference between the teams was not 3 goals. Made me smile to see Yankee playing for England

I then turned over to Fox Soccer Channel (yes there is a dedicated soccer station over here) to watch Arsenal thump Derby.

Soccer is growing over here, slowly but it is on the up.

By the way, I am not arrogant, and don't like being called so. Every country has it's share off arrogant people, England included.

There is one thing that you should understand very clearly.

What happens in England and to the English is very important to Australians, what happens in Australia and to Australians is of no interest whatsoever to the English. You need to define yourself by what you are and not just by the fact that you dont like the English. Come back in 50 years when you've matured into a real country.

As a Yank female (who loves both proper football AND her boyfriend, thank you very much), I want to say well done to England. You played us very tough in the first half, and until Kristine Lilly's walk-in (I feel horrible for Rachel Brown), there was always a chance Kelly White was going to do something fantastic with the ball (I wanted her to score so I could see her goal celebration ... star)

Keep up the good work, Hope Powell, and pretty soon, we'll have a great rivalry going. England ladies should hold their head high after this tournament -- no question. I raise my glass to all of you ... ale

On a seperate note ... would Hope Powell be interested in managing Chelsea? She's got to be better than Avram Ant ... smiley

"Not likely. Very few yanks even know there is a womens world cup. Even fewer know the usa women are among the best. "

You must be joking. They are probably the most popular female athletes in the country. Practically everyone knows who they are.

I was really impressed with the way the England players battled on till the final whistle, a great effort and what shame the media here (bbc excepted) couldnt have made the same effort to get behind them

the arrogant yanks will go bragging now how they're better than england.

-----------------------
how many times has this gem of a statement been cut & pasted? The US womens program IS & HAS BEEN the dominant program in Womens Football for some time, now.

We didn't need a 3-0 win over England to brag about our team. Of course, it is a nice win, it being in the WC and all...

Thanks NDIrish. For some reason my post was removed. As I stated I wasn't trying to be deliberately antagonistic as it was a genuine question. As ever, the BBC mods have not responded to my question regarding clarification over why it was removed. I think perhaps they do not like reasoned discussion, especially at a time when they are making the most over what scant little live football they can air.

I don't think womens football can be taken seriously untill the standard of goalkeeping improves. It's shocking to watch, some great techical players in the game but the goal tending is appaling.
How about slightly smaller goals for the womens game?

nope. never. Did you watch Hope Solo and Precious (??) from Nigeria..the goalkeepers were fantastic in that match. Let the rest of the world learn from them, and then we won't need to shorten the goalposts.

As a goalkeeper, I'm offended you would even suggest it.
