Liverpool not playing to potential

European Football Liverpool

Watched Liverpool tonight and v Portsmouth. What is it that we are afraid to pulverize teams and just kick the ball aimlessly away instead. Man U and Arsenal play the type of football which if Benitez allowed us to play there would be 6-0 away wins like home wins.

Nothing against Rafa but cmon we could have won both the last two matches .............easily if we had ambition

That was a good point for Liverpool last night against a team who are tipped to go through to the next stage.
However, I don't think I've seen such a dismal display from Liverpool in many a year.
Not one player played to his potential, possibly with the exception of Kuyt.

And this must be a first, I agreed with a comment made by Pleat!
He said he could see Pennant's sending off coming, though I suspect most people watching could see it too. So, why didn't Rafa take him off, it's not as if he was having a brilliant match.
Play like that against Birmingham and even they may beat Liverpool!

JamesAutar: how does drawing one game give away the entire premiership? And for someone who is (in your words) naive, to have got to 2 European finals in 3 years, I think thats pretty good going.

Liverpool played poorly yesterday and everyone agrees they were lucky to get away with a draw and a point.

But its one blip. Rafa will sort it as will the rest of the team. They are all in it to win, not just make up the numbers.

And its "Benitez" not Benetiz.

Thought it was a typical away performance after thinking about it, reading and watching it. with expansive players he wanted to play counter attacking football.. we never got going, porto didnt let us and fair play to them, dontt hink ive seen a european team hustle and bustle us off the ball as much as they did. they got the penalty, i said to my dad that they would hit it down the middle. got the equaliser quickly with our only shot and then from then on, it was upto porto to gain the initiative. Mourinho claimed last night its all about goals and thats what porto lacked. they didnt have a kuyt, torres or even a crouch to finish off the work of quaresma who i think should be our summer signing next year.
JP showed guts, commitment and willigness to work hard, yes made a mistake, it was needless but at least it showed he cared. JM played poorly yesterday but was hardly given time on the ball in good areas and SG was non existant apart from his last minute run into the oppo area where he should have scored.

other than that, tactics were spot on, frustrate porto for as long as you can and then try and get something out of the game, we got a point, they got a point and when they come to anfield it be a totally different game (something tells me that they dont know how to defend like we do for 90 mins)

Sorry but RAFA got team selection and tactics wrong again however another two rubbish perfomances on the back of an international break when we were THE form team in the PL ? - when is this madness about the international break going to stop - I for one am not interested in England - we will never be a top international side now as the PL is too dependent on international players - even the academies are recruiting international kids. Club first and country second I say - and RAFA.... get more positive with your substitutions - Pennant should not have even been left ON the field in the 2nd half. Mourinho or Wenger would have replaced him at half time/ wake up smell coffee boss !

"It´s incredible how a small country like Portugal has such a good players... Ronaldo, Nani, Quaresma etc etc. That hurts to english guys always jealous as usual. Imagine our teams with your budgets... Be fair and agree that Portugal is the best!"

Firstly, what does this have to do with CLUB football?

Secondly, who is being jealous here? Don't make things up just so you can criticise them (i.e. a straw man).

Thirdly, on the subject of the England national team, they have plenty of top players but lack motivation and tactical awareness. Too many egos spolining the team.

And before anyone accuses me opf lacking patriotism remeber we scousers have ALWAYS considered Liverpool to be a separate socialist republic that should be independent of England anyway LOL smiley

Watching yesterdays game was painful, Liverpool played really bad and all things considered the match was't great.
I think in a way there is a positive aspect, liverpool needed a challenge to wake them up and make them really improve their peformances in future.
I was very annoyed at pennant, he did not play that good and he got a needless red card which was completely his fault, I hope he learns from this, and torres, babel and gerrard only had very few spells of good football but all things considered they were poor.
Im a huge gerrard fan but 2 me, he has not been the same since that ankle injury.
O well lets just hopeliverpool learn a lot from the game and improve the next COMPETETIVE game no disrespect to birmingham.

I think we ought to give credit to porto. Quaresma - one of my favourite players - played awesome as usual but porto played very well as a team and i agree with dirty dollar, the RB was indeed very good.

i think we should easily win at anfield though. I mean no english club has ever won at porto so i wasn't expecting much.

Sorry but reality has to come and give back to by boys. Liverpool drew AWAY at Portsmouth, after an international break which didn't see them have any real practice before the game.

And then with a 36 hour swing which saw them AWAY to a very inventive and tough Porto team that were looking to expose us after every turn.

Pros and cons from the game, Liverpool have conceded yet another penalty (4 for the season in all competitions), but have managed not conceded in open-play yet.

For all of Porto's inventiveness they could not break our back-line and score in open-play which is very positive. UNFORTUNATELY for Birmingham, they'll have to feel our wrath in the worse way after some practice and an Anfield crowd that has something to say!
