Trouble at the top for England

Having Owais Shah at seven is a luxury England cannot afford

Defeat by Australia, as much as it hurts England fans, should not automatically be cause for deep soul-searching.

But the way England's top order has misfired in their opening two World Twenty20 games will have worried anyone connected with the team.

There was much debate before the tournament started, which has continued since it began, about whether the selectors were right to pick so-called Twenty20 specialists.

Neither Darren Maddy nor Luke Wright looked comfortable against the Aussies and Zimbabwe, and those who suggest domestic Twenty20 and this level of cricket are different ball games appear to have been vindicated.

That debate can continue after the competition has finished. For the moment, England need to decide what will help them progress from the Super Eights phase, which starts on Sunday when they take on hosts South Africa.

I have never been a big fan of opening with Matt Prior and to me a top three of him, Maddy and Wright does not look capable of taxing top-quality bowling attacks.

Having Owais Shah down at seven appears a luxury they cannot afford also - how many batsmen do you need in such a short format (mind you having 22 wouldn't have done England much good today!)?

The idea of promoting Andrew Flintoff to open and having Pietersen at three has been mooted and I'm inclined to agree.

I would not bring back Vikram Solanki, the other opening option in the squad, and having Wright and Prior lower down the order makes more sense.

So for me England ought to go with a line-up of:

Maddy, Flintoff, Pietersen, Collingwood, Shah, Wright, Prior, Mascarenhas, Schofield, Broad, Anderson.

What do you think?

The next 20/20 world cup should be about the players with the most runs and most wickets from each invited country after having played in domestic games in their own country, that way we might get players of unknown quantites playing for their country. Also it would be plain to see who makes the squad no favours given. What do you think.

in regards to what covercourt said, I like thie idea that the 20/20 could become a more club orientated version. have the best 20/20 clubs in the world come together for a 2 week long event. If 20/20 is about popularising cricket then why not do it for counties/states/provinces rather than just international teams. it can be played so quickly it's cost effective I think.

I think Coverout & Alan have 2 seperate ideas, but both a couple of potential Gems!

A slight problem I see is that centraly contracted players might not get to play enough County/State/Province cricket to qualify for the format that Coverout suggests, and the 20/20 WorldCup will only flourish if the fans get to see Cricket's Superstars.

Why not combine both ideas and create a type of 20/20 "Champions League", comprising of the best County/State/Province side from each country in just like alan said, a 2week event?

Sri Lanka will give anyone a good game. I could see them winning it.

I'd go with...

Maddy
Shah
Pietersen
Collingwood
Wright
Flintoff
Prior
Mascarenhas
Snape
Schofield
Broad

The South Africans arent the best players of spin, so Id play Snape and Schofield. Maddy should also should not be overlooked as bowler.

Pietersen and Shah should definitely bat higher up. England also need to be far more flexible with the batting line up as the game goes on.

If they win the toss- bowl first!

I agree with Paresh regards the keeper opening and wasting Shah down the order. I reckon England should have taken a keeper like Mustard if they were going to open with them, at least Mustard bats there for Durham AND is a success.

England are too wrapped up in theory, picking batsmen for ODIs that in theory score a run a ball and picking half a dozen bits n pieces cricketers to bowl economically but carry no wicket threat. The keeper opening is one that has failed and yet continues, not since Stewart has it worked and only because he was a converted batsman. They did it with Jones, they're doing it with Prior. Now while T20 isn't ODI cricket there's been nothing to suggest this is going to work :-

G.Jones ODIs

Opening - 139 runs @ 19.86
Other - 676 runs @ 26.00

M.Prior ODIs

Opening - 464 runs @ 23.20
Other - 5 runs @ 2.50

Prior hasn't been a success opening and not given much of a go elsewhere. Shah averages 42.00 batting at six and 32.18 batting at five in ODIs.

It's nothing new for England to bat players where they are least effective, Vaughan insisted on opening in ODIs where he averages 19.29, while he averages 32.67 batting at three.

You'd think England would do their homework - obviously not

Yeah I agree Prior and wright just look out of their depth in the top order. Why not even open with kp as he seems to end up in bat by the first few overs so it would be easier if he just opened. Broad hasn't used his head enough when he has been bowling and constant bouncers just isn't working

Only problems with the club 20/20 format is that it isnt yet used in enough countries to warrant the best players/clubs being used. Also in English county cricket many overseas players are used and they may play for other successful teams in other countrys. Another major problem with the best First class teams being used is that they wouldn't countain the stars that the average 20/20 fan is there to see. English cricketers play very little county 20/20 so would be unlikely to play. The money men in the game would never allow this so it would never happen.

Back to the best english lineup my thoughts are that one suggested seems as good as any. Prior should not open that is so obvious it seems a bit crazy no1 has noticed! Wright is a lower order slogger although he has a touch of class. How broad is below schofield i do not know tho, broad has a good eye for timing and very long arms for swinging that bat!
