Scots Savour Tango in Paris

International Scotland

To beat World Cup finalists France once is cocky - to do so again in their own backyard smacks of arrogance.

Just when you thought Scotland had exhausted their surprise package status, they produce another outrageous result.

James McFadden's 30-yard sizzler in the Parc des Princes puts the Scots on the verge of qualifying for their first major finals since the 1998 World Cup.

Those Tartan Army fans lucky enough to have witnessed the 1-0 win over France at Hampden last October probably thought that victory would never be eclipsed.

France were wounded by that reverse, we were told.

They had slipped once - they wouldn't permit another French farce.

But the Parc des Princes appeared to be a home game for Scotland - such was the sheer number of Tartan Army foot soldiers who had tickets for the game.

Thousands of Scotland fans packed the stadium to sing their hearts out - and the pockets of empty seats in the home section spoke volumes of their dismissive attitude.

The French public believed the result was a foregone conclusion - Scotland would be dismantled and an easy three points were a formality.

But just as the Scots struggled with their favourites' tag against Lithuania at Hampden on Saturday, they appeared to relish their underdog status in Paris.

Whether it was captain Patrick Vieira, or the superb winger Franck Ribery, no French player was safe from the tenacious Scots who snarled and harried, chased and tackled.

Scott Brown and Paul Hartley were the attack dogs in midfield.

Craig Gordon, David Weir and Stephen McManus acted as the ring of steel separating Les Blues from the Scots' goal.

France hammered Scotland.

Countless shots were blocked, passes thwarted, corners cleared.

The shot count raced as high as the collective pulse as Scotland fans willed their charges to stand firm.

France's cultured players crafted some openings, but time and again their big guns were spiked by the Scots.

If the home side's build-up play was impressive, Scotland's defensive cordon was its equal.

Ribery's rapier-like charges towards goal were repelled, but he dusted himself down and tried again, and again, and again.

Then McFadden collected the ball 30 yards from goal and his flashing drive was helped into the net by the less than convincing Mikael Landreau.

The French coach Raymond Domenech must have wanted the ground to swallow him up.

Two games against France - six points.

Scotland's greatest ever result? Possibly.

Sitting top of Group B with three games remaining, Scotland are on the cusp of greatness.

Booking a place in the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer is now no longer a dream.

It is within the grasp of Alex McLeish's side.

A swing of McFadden's left boot has made the dream a reality, and victory against Ukraine at Hampden all but guarantees the Scots a place in the finals.

On this form, who would bet against them?

Lets here more from the BBC about the fans. Ok we cant get on the pitch and kick the ball, but on wednesday we did everything but that.
From the word go France knew we were in town and thousands marched in a parade from the Eiffel Tower to the Stadium singing all the way.
At the stadium we joined in with the French to sing both National Anthems. Then on the whistle we hassled every French ball and cheered every Scottish ball.
McFadden may have scored the goal but believe me at least 15 thousand scottish fans in the stadium kicked the ball with him.

We often talk of the work done by the back room staff never being seen. Lets get the BBC right amongst the other back room staff THE FANS lets really show the people, how we organise it, how the fans get there, how we build the atmosphere before the team arrives, lets show what a fantastic support does to help a team.

Once again well done to the " TARTAN ARMY " probably the best supporters in the world

Actually we need 6 points, as long as 3 of them are off Italy. A tall order.

Fantastic performance by every single player on Wednesday night, was at the game on Saturday against Lithuania and didn't think McFadden could score a better goal, how wrong was I? What a screamer he scored, the man is a now a legend throughout Scotland.

The French were smug and cocky and it just shows you what hard work, grit and determination can do for you against a team who play as individuals but are more technically gifted.

Our destiny is in our own hands now, but good luck to the boys and Alex McLeish, the result helps but we've still got a lot to do!

I just can't believe the result in Paris. Absolutely unbelievable. When I think back to the dark dark Bertie days, I remember thinking that any form of significant improvement was 10 years away. I ask myself to what extent he was responsible for this as he did blood quite a number of the guys that started the other night-and then I remember the tactical shambles he was responsible for that made us such a laughing stock.
Big thing for me is that we also have so many good young players coming through-I'd love to know who is responsible for all these brilliant young ex hibees. Scotty Brown for example, is a joy to watch.
Pleasing thing is also that we are not getting carried away here-we all know it is still going to be very difficult.

Dare I say it, but also pleased to see England doing well and the vulture Press getting of SMs back.

What a joy it is to have our footballing credibility back so wonderfully!

"Barry Fergusons leads the team out. Darren will soon enough,He's a great player, maybe my fav.(along with mcfadden course).lol I'm a celtic fan but fair dues to our captain for scotland. he leads by example.Hated him before this campaign,Funny whats its done to us. Great feeling." After leaving Rangers in 2003 iv never forgiven Captain Fantastic. Ive never seen his worth as Scotland captain either, and think that Davie Weir really should hold the armband. But I suppose an armband doesnt prove much, Weir is a leader on the pitch, as are Fletcher, Gordon, McManus and as shown on Wednesday, Paul Hartley. I thought he was absolutely fantastic, and deserved MOTM.

In my 43 years that is probably our greatest win and Mchaddens strike will live with me forever.
Although I am delighted we have got our self respect back I will be devastated if we do not qualify.I do not want this to be another glorious failure - our fans are the best in the world and desrve a little bit of glory.
Also given the fact that we cruelly denied the chance to stage next years tournament it would be fantastic if we could qualify for it the hard way

We are still without doubt the underdogs to qualify but it is not inconceivable that some of the also-rans might still do us a favour.

1. Lithuania away to france - they are technically good enough to put on a good show against teams ranked well above them. Remeber away to Italy at the start. If the french heads are still in tatters after the scotland game, themy might bottle it again.

2. Ukraine at home to france - again, will the pressure get to them? Maybe the motivation of giving their fans a lift might be enough to spur the home team on (If they can resist the brown envelopes They've definently got the players.

3. Georgia in Italy - the least likely but anyone playing the world champions has got to be up for it and they are not without quality.

I think now is the time more than ever for the National team to feel cocky and confident with themselves. We cant go into the nect two games with a "lucky to be at this stage" attitude. We need to approach the game with a self believe and a flare. Everyone knows Scotland play well as the underdogs, so we need to be carefull we dont slip up with the Ukraine, Georgia games. Both very hard games, but MUST WINS, or at least get 4 points out the two. It would be a bonus after that if we got a point against the Italians.

beating france is an amazing achievement , now its reality check time. we still have 3 tough games to play and we could find ourselves in the position of depending on other results to qualify , maybe its our time to get a bit of luck.
