Dear Ian, You always will stay in my memory as a Great Man! You will never be forgotten. You taught me a lot of things. Within one year you became so closed to me... I am so sad now! Rest In Peace, my coach.
All respect to his family!

I'm a Mackem born and brought up in Roker, and I was 7 when Ian Porterfield scored that wonderful goal. I have fond memories of going round to Roker Park with my Mam & Dad to see the tem bring the cup home.
I met Ian in Zambia. I was there as a VSO volunteer and I chatted to him a couple of times in Lusaka....he recognised my accent!!
He will never be forgotten in Sunderland, but he was Scottish and when I was at the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden yesterday, I nominated him for the Hall of Fame.

My family were on holiday in Nicosia, Cyprus last February when I saw many track suited footballers - and one (obviously the manager whose face I recognised but could not put a name to).An hour or so later we went for a coffee in Ledra Street, Herakles Ice Cream parlour, and saw the track suited guy with his wife. The instant we sat on the next table the name - and the game in May 1973 - came to me - the breaker of Leeds hearts himself. He looked at me and knew I'd recognised him. We chatted for an hour or so - including wives and the lovely Glenda telling my wife how she and Ian met when coaching in Trinidad, Ian and I reminicing and chatting about all things football from then till now. The time flew and a more unassuming, warm person you couldn't have wished to meet. We said our farewells, shook hands - I thought to ask for a photo would have been 'twee' - I was 46 after all. On our return, I looked up Ian's career - I'd forgotten about all the domestic managerial appointments and boasted to my friends.
Legend? - not for me to say. Warm, friendly, unassuming football man - certainly. God Bless, Ian - enjoy soring plenty 'upstairs' big man....

Great memories come flooding back of a great man. So many years of under achievement and disappointment were washed away from the whole town when he scored that magnificent goal.
