That was close! What do you think?

Welsh Wales
comment on the article

What's your thoughts on Wales' opening World Cup victory over Canada?

The side suffered a huge scare and were 12-9 down at half-time before falling further behind following scrum-half Williams try.

But the introduction of Stephen Jones and Gareth Thomas sparked Wales to life as they dominated the last half hour, scoring five tries to run out 42-17 winners.

I agree that it appeared that some Welsh players only started playing when messrs Thomas & Jones were introduced. If this is the case then not only have Wales got the worst coach of all time, but also `player power` that ousted Mike Ruddock is still prevalent and if we are not united when we put on a Welsh jersey, then we truly are lost! As far as the overall performance is concerned, it was inept and unprofessional. At times it looked as if Canada could do whatever they wanted. If they kept it tight in the forwards they could have walked the length of the field and scored at will.

I thought Jenkins might be making history untill the introduction of the two captain by being the first coach to be sacked during a World Cup. I've never liked his coaching set-up, far too green and it hasthe feel of an old boys club to it. It is going to take them all time to adjust to international coaching, the setup could be good but I get the feeling that unless things start to realy improve they wont get to prove it.

The difference Alfie and Jones made was dramatic, before they came on we were unable to deefnd close to our line, once they were there we looked far more inpeneratable. I suspect that Alfie will 15 next week, Morgan hasn't been involved much but then apart from a couple of tackles neither has Mark Jones. The five-eighths positions are going to be the toughest to call, Hook is definatly more creative but as they say its defences that win World Cups.

Have to agree with most of the above, especially about Peel. He just seems out of sorts even jaded. Also I don't feel he combines well with James Hook. I know they haven't played as a combination that often but they don't seem the right combination to gel. I think that's the most important combination on the pitch and we need a sound partnership there.Being an osprey fan I'm not overjoyed about putting more scarlets in the team, but do feel that the team is suffering with that combination. If they start with peel and Jones for the Aus game (which seems likely,)then need to change later, rather than just bringing on Hook I feel they would be better changing the whole combination and bringing on Philips as well..........

Richie Rees Friday evening reminded me how Peel used to play. The guy was phenominal Fri evening...how did we let him go?

I don't think it's anyone trying to divert attention from the field that's making people complain about the ITV coverage - the camera-work was absolutely awful - the most unprofessional I've seen in a very long time. And please don't even mention the commentators.

On the game it was clear that Peel and Hook had no great understanding - I'm a big fan of James Hook, but I'd put him at 12 rather than 10.

Whatever other posters might say, the game changed the instant the substitutions were made. This is because the balance of the side was restored.

The suggestion that "player power" had anything to do with this is preposterous. Does anyone really think that these guys would purposely play badly?

How can peel be jaded? He's played about three games since April.

I worry about Hook. He seems to have forgotten how to control a game like he did against Australia last November. Too many poor decisions. Should we be reminded that only 18 months ago he was playing club rugby. It is brought up every time he plays well, but is more appropriate a stat when he plays badly

Ironically wasn't it the Oz game last Autumn whereby Hook came on to win the game from what appeared to be a lacklustre appearance from SJ??
My point is that on Sunday and in that Australia game it was the lack of forward momentum that gave the 3/4 line slow or practically dead ball.
Alternatively, the training fly-half prior to the game has had any creativity/confidence in gameplan (dare i say it) coached out of him and instead sits too flat in the midfield channel to offer any realistically good ball to the rest of the back-line.
I had thought it was the captaincy weighing heavily on the shoulders of SJ but now I'm really not so sure...

What say you?

The main fault in the 1st half was that we lost field position and ball by kicking for goal too often. Yes we got 3 points but what we really needed was time with the ball so that the team could get going and acquire some confidence. Once that happened we absolutely trounced them. In contradiction of some of the comments, it was the way that Stephen attacked the gain line that was most impressive, reminded me of Contepomi at his best.
