Sir Tasker Watkins, one of Britain's greatest war heroes, recipient of the Victoria Cross and an eminent retired judge, has died at the age of 88.

He was Welsh Rugby Union president for 11 years, and the national team will wear black armbands in tribute for their opening World Cup game in Nantes.

Sir Tasker was 25 in 1944 when he won Wales's first Victoria Cross of World War II in northern France.

I was too ILL, to watch the news, at all, yesterday, but, at the moment, I am trying to compile a list, of ALL AWARDEES, of the Victoria Cross, so, - having just READ about this in the newspaper, - I am VERY UPSET, indeed, right now!

I would just like to say, that, the World could do with MANY MORE like this man!

May he REST IN PEACE, now, - and EVERMORE!

God BLESS you, SIR TASKER WATKINS, V.C.!

I am a proud and passionate welshman and I stand with my chest out proudly admiring all what Tasker Watkins was about, He will long be remembered for his bravery during ww2 and indeed his presidency of the wru, I hope that our nation embraces this sad loss and gives him and his family all the respect due.. A statue in the middle of Cardiff a fitting tribute indeed to a great Welshman!

I never met Sir Tasker, but he was on my list of people I would like to meet. He was certainly the only man to reach the very top of the legal profession AND win the VC - there will never be another. Reading the tributes to him, and knowing him through his legal judgments, several things come out:
a) He came from a modest background, but got the kind of old-fashioned grammar school education that enabled him to reach the heights;
b) There is the interesting mix of the man who was superlatively brave in battle, but also had the intellect, the steadiness and the wisdom required of judges, as well as the determination to make the leap in the dark of choosing the Bar as a profession despite his 'non-traditional' background, and at a time when he had a wife and young family.
c) He was a thoroughly decent and honourable man, of a kind typical of his generation, who went through the war, but undervalued in the age of David Beckham and Jade Goody.

God rest his soul, and my condolences to his family.

Rest in Peace, Sir Tasker.

Perhaps the WRU could organise a tribute match in his honour, with the profits made
going to the Royal British Legion?
