Wales v Germany - player ratings

Welsh Wales
comment on the article

Were Wales poor or Germany just too good? What do you reckon of my player ratings from the game. For me Jason Koumas had a very poor game, but then maybe I am being too harsh. Only Simon Davies and James Collins stood out. Do you agree?

Wayne Hennessey - 6/10: Beaten twice by Miroslav Klose and was kept busy all night. Not at fault for either goal and was otherwise solid.

Sam Ricketts - 5/10: Given a torrid time by Bastian Schweinsteiger who ran the Wales defence raggid. Struggled to make any impact going forward.

Danny Gabbidon - 5/10: Took over the captain's arm-band from Craig Bellamy but didn't show enough leadership qualities to justify John Toshack's faith in him. Distribution was also poor.

James Collins - 7/10: Wales' best defender. Tackled bravely and stuck to his task, but German quality proved too much for the West Ham defender.

Lewin Nyatanga - 6/10: Still finding his feet on the international circuit and will have learnt a lot after tonight's defeat. Was solid but unspectacular and Wales needed more from him.

Gareth Bale - 6/10: At fault for Germany's second goal but otherwise a spirited display. Showed enterprise and energy going forward.

Joe Ledley - 5/10: Struggled to make an impact and was replaced at half-time.

Jason Koumas - 5/10: Caught in possession for Germany's first goal and was wayward with his striking. A poor performance by Koumas who had been hailed by Toshack as Ryan Giggs' replacement. Replaced mid-way through the second-half.

Carl Robinson - 5/10: Caught a plan from Canada for the game. On this evidence he should have stayed in Toronto. Worked hard but was relatively anonymous.

Simon Davies - 7/10: Getting back to his best form and played well. Was crowded out though by an impressive German midfield. Replaced by Andrew Crofts late-on.

Freddie Eastwood - 6/10: Ran his heart out but was well marshalled by the German defence and struggled to make an impact.

Subs:
Robert Earnshaw - 6/10: Caused a threat with his pace but had to rely on half-chances.

Carl Fletcher - 5/10: Second half replacement for Jason Koumas.

Andrew Crofts - 5/10: Second half replacement for Simon Davies.

Subs not used:

Price, Morgan, Llewellyn, Jones,

thecraftyleek : If Wales are compared to Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, all of these teams have had a better chance of qualifying this time around than Wales.

No thecraftyleek, Wales are NOT compared to the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.
If they were, they would have been in the same pots (i.e. 4th), as opposed to 5th or 6th.

No wonder the attendance was poor, expensive tickets and little or no chance of qualifying.

I have to agree with others that Toshack needs to take some blame for the defeat against germany. He got it tactically very wrong. We can't try to play football against a much better footballing side than us. Germany outplayed us for the majority of the game and didn't really have to work that hard.

I'm all in favour of what Toshack is trying to do in bringing through a new generation of players brought up on a policy of passing football that will doubtless yield benefits in the long term. However, right now we are suffering. We are on course to be in the 6th pot of seeding for the next qualifiers, depending on the format which has yet to be decided by UEFA. That is just not good enough. So it vitally important that we get results now as well as building for the future. This Slovakia game (and others like it) should be targeted as a must win game if we are to even have a chance in the next two sets of qualifiers at which point this side will be reaching its peak.

John Toshack has condemned his players and their commitment, but he went into this game, at home, needing 3 points, with a defensive formation, playing just one striker. So was he playing for a draw or just a low scoring defeat? When will these Manager's learn that there is no point playing negatively, even if it is against Germany. 'Attack is the best means of defence' has long been a valid saying. You must play 2 strikers otherwise the one guy up front just gets crowded out and the ball comes straight back. It allowed the Germans to play one of their defenders in more attacking role, so putting more pressure on the Welsh. The Germans must have thought it Christmas when they saw the Welsh line-up so negatively. Toshack, like so many others is out of touch when it comes to football tactics.

the crowd was poor and the Germans out sung us with 2,500 fans there. Wales top platyers did'nt pefrom (Koumas, Bale) the tactics were wrong and Germany are one of the worlds best teams and are on top form latley. Ypu cant expect too much against that type of opposistion. Results have not been that bad, two loses in 9 games aint too bad is it? We are improving and the result in Bulagria was excellent, a good result against the Slovaks will do us the world of good.

Wales couldn't win anything when we had half decent players, so what chance do we have now?

Unfortunately, the system works against teams like Wales.
A "small nation" country has a run of bad results, so slip down the world rankings.
Next competition, because of that ranking, they're put in a group with strong opponents.
Result, more losses, no qualification and slips further down the world rankings.

Next competition, put in a group of even more stronger opponents ......... a downward spiral.

I agree totally with West London Bluebird. The PA announcer is a joke. There is no chance of creating any positive atmosphere at matches with this fool talking nonsense in the background. Bring back Cardiff City's Ali as soon as possible.

If you would have had someone on that piych to nail Schweinsteiger in the firs few minutes the game would have been somewhat better. He had so much room to think we had three in the centre of midfield to their 2. I think a few crunching takles would have lifted the crowd somewhat too but we just looked like a bunch of fairies! That game cried out for a Robbie Savage foul!! The welsh boys were almost too professional and forgot what a bit of grit and determination is, the next Welsh training session should be a freindly against a sunday league team to remind them how to rough people up!!

With Toshack in charge Wales have moved .... backwards!

I'm not Savages biggest fan, but given there's no great depth to the Welsh squad a player of his quality and experience would be useful. But Toshack shot himself in the foot a long time ago with this one

Wales were indded awful against Germany but so many other teams would strugle to beat them so we cant beat ourselves toomuch about it. I think the last thing we need is Robbie Savage coming back into the fold to kick people all over the park, he hasn't got the engine anymore to compete at international level. The youth are the future, i agree with Toshack bringing in youngsters to get used to the international game. Hopefully by the time the next qualifiers roll around we'll start to see some of the progress.
