McClaren selection does the trick

Euro 2008 England
comment on the article

Steve McClaren has waited a long time to cut a picture of satisfaction as England coach.

And while he was right not to get carried away with England's 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifier win against a truly wretched Israel, he deserved his moment of quiet contentment.

Russia will be tougher than this on Wednesday.

Indeed, one former England international claimed Wembley Park Juniors would be a tougher assignment than Israel.

But England completed the task that was put in front of them with a flourish, boosted their confidence, enhanced their goal difference and kept a clean sheet.

It was the game the phrase "job done" was invented for.

But as someone who, along with many others, has criticised McClaren, it is time to give the coach credit where it is due.

The recall of Emile Heskey was greeted with universal apathy - not surprising giving the big man's previous England career.

Surely this was a retrograde step, a return to a by-gone era of under-achievement?

And yet there was a clear method in what many saw as McClaren's madness.

Of all his illustrious partners, Michael Owen loves Heskey's selfless approach more than any other.

Owen thrives when Heskey plays. The results show it. And so it proved again at Wembley.

Heskey missed what chances came his way it's true, but his physical presence unsettled Israel and gave England a target, leaving Owen with room to do his work in the crucial parts of the pitch.

Owen's 20-yard strike was out of context with a display that saw Heskey doing the donkey work to allow him into the danger areas he loves.

He may not be the speed merchant of years gone by, but Owen remains a master predator at the highest level.

Owen is still England's best international goalscorer and no matter how many times he is written off, he is always quick to prove that remains the case.

On the flanks McClaren resisted the temptation to push Joe Cole inside, entrusting that role to the returning Gareth Barry.

Barry flourished alongside Steven Gerrard, while Cole was a constant source of danger, setting up Shaun Wright-Phillips' goal and almost creating another for Owen.

McClaren also produced a winner with Wright-Phillips, who has shown great strength of character to emerge from the shadows at Chelsea and return for England.

He was a tireless threat, deserved his goal and the standing ovation he received when he was replaced late on by David Bentley.

McClaren needed the victory. Nothing else would have done, so it was with a mixture of relief and satisfaction that he faced his inquisitors.

He immediately turned his thoughts to Russia, because once the dust has settled on this victory, McClaren will know this is the key part of England's Euro 2008 double header.

Heskey must not slip back into his old ways, England will need to be more alert at the back and more progressive in midfield.

Russia are also more likely to test the fragile confidence of keeper Paul Robinson than Israel - who did not even test him with a shot on target.

It was indeed job done, but a much bigger one lies ahead on Wednesday.

The final score would be 2-1 for England. The team is on high after their win over Israel.

Stella-roy, I think you are being generous to Russia, they have proved they can only score against a kindergarden defence, they will need to venture out of their own half to reach the dizzy heights of a 2-1 score line.

brvbelcher - don't try and twist stats Russia have played two games against other teams in the top half so they have scored in 50% of the matches.
Fact is though McClown is still an inept manager who will never take England anywhere.
He has shown time and again he can't cut it when facing tough decisions and though I will watch every England match and support them I will never think McClown is anything other than a brown-noser who was given the job because the FA needed a yes man.

Can i possibly suggest that yes SWP played well and scored a good goal - he cannot cross for toffee. What happens when a defender with a bit of savvy drops off and then tackles winning the ball. SWP instead of Becks - Becks hasn't the speed but who needs it when you can ping a ball 40 yards on to the strikers toe and head. If SWp is going to fill becks shoes then he needs to take crossing practice from the master !!!

would you care to tell us exactly when "becks" did that in a major tournament game against a first world opponent with professional defenders nosser? You talk of what happens with swp, well ill tell "what happened" with "becks".This viciously overhyped nomad was utterly found out whenever an intelligent coahcsuch as scolari instructed his defence how to conatin hopelessly limited and one-dimensional players who have npo plan b whatsoever. Are you completely dumbfounded as to why he was so irrelevant across 5 major tournaments or do you just not understand how anyone "so famous" might nt be all hes cracked up to by the celebrity-based media you read so much of in the past?England had width, depth, pace and the ability to truly stretch a side with swp on saturady and going back to the turgid beckham way which had 5 cvhances in tournaments to prove itself and failed horribly on every occassion is no way to go,not in a million years.

To be honest I do actually agree with you Dwight. I just do not like the scapegoating way you make some of your points.

Whilst yes I think SWP needs to improve a bit on delivery and needs to keep playing at Chelsea (something he was not before), i think he deserves his spot ahead of Becks now. SWP also did a lot of really good working back on Saturday. He played his heart out. I just don;t agree with making any players a scapegoat.

Richyburger - " I will never think McClown is anything other than"

So in other words, regardless of what McClaren does you wont give him any credit! As you said yourself?

I am not a McClaren fan, but we have to give him credit where its due! And regardless of how weak (or not so weak) they are, England had a very comfortable win!

I just hope he sticks to this team, if Heskey is fit, and also keeps to the Barry/Gerrard partnership in midfield!

And he did show "bottle" to stick with Robinson, and I agree with that too!

It was a good display all round, but showed how vital Gerrard is to us. He was the one pulling the strings in midfield allowing others to do their job, just wouldn't have been the same with Frank 'I can only score with the aid of a deflection' Lampard. However I must disagree with your comment "Owen remains a master predator at the highest level". He missed at least 4 absolute sitters and while I recognise he is still returning to full fitness and he will no doubt recover form, against better opposition he would only get one maybe two of those chances which he MUST put away. I dare say Andy Johnson would have.

I think heskey was a wise choice.... I know its weird to say it but hes just what we need ... i would say crouch but he lacks the ONE single thing we need up front and that is strength I mean if rooney was only 6ft tall it would be bliss but sadly he aint so until england brings forth an english drogba.... we will be stuck with heskey.... (next will probably be harewood whom i wanted back when he scored 15 goals for west ham in their first season back up... now he would suck.
) ps - Isreal are an international team. you have to remember that means THE BEST OF ISREAL and we beat em as we wer expected. 3 - 0 these days is harder to do then it was 6 or 7 years ago.
