NFL week one preview - Patriots at Jets

comment on the article
Brady and Moss

New England Patriots at New York Jets - Sunday, 1800 BST

New Orleans and Indianapolis kick off the 2007 NFL season in the early hours of Friday morning UK time but for me the most important game of the weekend will be the visit of New England to the Meadowlands.

This is a replay of last season’s American Football Conference wildcard playoff round, when the Patriots ended the Jets season with a Tom Brady-inspired 37-16 victory.

It once again pits Jets second-year coach Eric Mangini with his former mentor Bill Belichick.

And it marks the beginning of former all-star receiver Randy Moss’s attempt to rehabilitate after two highly disappointing seasons in Oakland.

The Jets relied on their defence last year on their way to a 10-6 record, with their running game hamstrung by a season-long injury to Curtis Martin and quarterback Chad Pennington still recovering form after shoulder surgery.

Both sides will showcase the defensive aggression of their head coaches and the result will depend on how well their opponents deal with it
Pennington remains a question mark but there has been an upgrade in the backfield, where Thomas Jones was brought in from the Bears in a trade in March.

New England don’t usually go in for major acquisitions, preferring to develop their own talent and make the most of other teams’ cast-offs, but this off-season they realised the need to completely re-vamp their receiving corps, with Moss the highlight.

After a frustrating season Tom Brady, one of the game’s pre-eminent quarterbacks, finally has a set of targets to match his ability.

After Corey Dillon’s retirement, Laurence Maroney is likely to use his second season in the league to underline his potential as one of the finest running backs of the next generation.

Both sides will showcase the defensive aggression of their head coaches and the result will depend on how well their opponents deal with it.

With his restructured cast, Brady is far better supported than Pennington so I expect the Patriots to prevail 31-17.

Meanwhile, it’s a little early to make any headway on the Six big questions for NFL 2007 which I posed at the start of pre-season.

A quick update on my fantasy football fortunes, though: “L-I-M-E-Y – no alibi” fell victim to their general manager’s hectic social diary so the draft was run on autopick on Friday evening.

I returned to find I had not selected a quarterback until the seventh round. And that was Denver’s Jay Cutler.

Frantic activity in the free-agent market has landed me with veteran Steve McNair, although things could look dicey again if the Ravens move for Jacksonville cast-off Byron Leftwich.

Hopefully crack receivers Steve Smith and Marques Colston, coupled with Eagles back Brian Westbrook (who has done well for me in the past despite my scepticism of him in this column) will keep my head above water.

Yes channel 5 is showing the Monday Night Game (Ravens @ Bengals) and after either week 8 or 9 (when the baseball world series has ended) channel 5 will be showing the Sunday Night Game too, those games promise to be good as the american broadcasting station NBC chooses the best game and that one will be shown on Sunday Nights.

Patriots to beat Jets by one or two touchdowns, we may have lost Rodney Harrison for 4 games but with the aerial attack we have it should be enough.

The Patriots may have lost Harrison, but for this game it may not be a problem as I dont think the Jets have anyone who can attack the middle of the field. With Dyson and Miller possibly out in the Jets secondary, Revis and Barrett will be asked to contain the Patriots formidable recieving corps. On the plus side, if the Jets O-line can get Thomas Jones to the second level, he can attack the Pats ageing linebackers. The Jets also have one of the leagues best safties in Kerry Rhodes, who will help stop Welker in the slot.

Overall, even if Moss is out aswell, I see the Pats being too strong, especially if the Jets run defense is as bad as it was last year - Maroney will rip throigh them unless they sort it out.

Let's not forget Donte Stallworth as the deep threat for Brady. He hasn't had one for years and could pair well with Reche Caldwell (if he gets his contacts right! smiley) even with Moss out. This should definitely help their running game even more. Belichick is a magician at managing depleted resources. He has the element of surprise in his tactics which makes the game exciting.

I’ve just been watching the Colts-Saints game. Richytrue, I agree on the impressiveness of the Indy defence, especially the speed of their front seven, whose reaction times were amazing against run and pass.

The Colts defensive backfield also outstanding, with safety Bob Sanders underlining his importance, as he did when he returned from injury late last year.

It will always take time for an offence to gel at the start of the year, especially in the passing game – New Orleans showed that as they just seemed unable to click.

But Indianapolis have the benefit of the years of experience shared by Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, and they exploited it.

Meanwhile, Saints corner Fred Thomas must be having a good chuckle. He was dumped down the depth chart in favour of former Colt Jason David after being exploited regularly at the end of last season.

David was directly responsible for three deep passes for scores.

I think the Colts may do it again after last nights blow out.

Other than that the usual suspects - Patriots, Chargers, Saints, Ravens, Bears.

Dark Horses - Dallas

Colts look to be the team to beat, and as in recent years the AFC looks stronger than the NFC which is a real turnaround from the Cowboys/49ers/Redskins/Giants era I grew up with.

Teams like the Jets and Patriots will be up there competing with Indy, while in the NFC if the Bears can build on last season and get more consistancy then they have a good chance of going to the superbowl.

Finally, Come on NYG!!!

Just remembered, Bears were in the superbowl last year, although I still think they were inconsistant. If they improve this year they can certainly get back again, and maybe challenge in the big game!

Kevin McCabe thinks the Cowboys will win, but I think the Colts or the Patriots will win

The Patriots getting Randy Moss will be key to where the SuperBowl goes, and I think a good start for the Patriots will give them the SuperBowl this year
