Scrum V player ratings: Blues v Ospreys

Welsh Wales
comment on the article

Here are my player ratings - let me know what you think (I'm sure you will!!)

Scrum V's man-of-the-match: Paul Tito

Blues:

Ben Blair - 5
An uncharacteristically quiet game from the classy Kiwi.

Rhys Williams - 7
The wing saw little of the ball, but took his try well.

Tal Selley - 6
Solid enough but a quiet game against the team he left in the summer for a season-long loan at the Blues.

Dafydd Hewitt - 6
The youngster did not make an impression on the Ospreys' physical centre pairing, but the experience will serve him well.

Jamie Roberts - 6
Although he will take time to adjust to the step up to regional level, Roberts has all the physical attributes and showed flashes of his potential. Connor's late miss fortunately spared Roberts from giving away a penalty that would have cost his side the game.

Nicky Robinson - 7
Looked to play an expansive game that threatened to open up the Ospreys and - the conversion aside - kicked superbly. Robinson's game management near the end needs to be looked at, though, as Dai Young's pointed comments made clear.

Jason Spice - 6
Keen to make a mark on his old team after a summer move. The accuracy was somewhat lacking at times, but he had a hand in the game's only try.

John Yapp - 8
The Wales discard made a real mark on the Ospreys scrum as the Blues took charge after the break.

Gareth Williams - 8
Had a bruising battle with Richard Hibbard in the tight and looked sharp in the loose, playing a key role in the opening try.

Gary Powell - 8
Helped give the Blues a second-half stranglehold in the tight, Powell looked motivated by his side's fruitless summer search for a new number three.

Deiniol Jones - 7
The usual hard-grafting, little-seen effort from Jones, helping to disrupt the visitors' line-out. Sound if unspectacular.

Paul Tito - 9
Power, aggression, skill and aerial supremacy, the Blues have imported another nugget from New Zealand.

Maama Molitika - 6
A quiet game, but the Tongan's off-load for Williams' try was pure class.

Robin Sowden-Taylor - 6
Solid display, though Martyn Williams will not be too worried about reclaiming his number seven jersey.

Xavier Rush (capt) - 7
Led from the front with urgency, drive and no little skill. The ex-All Black will be crucial to his team's success this season.

Ospreys:

Lee Byrne - 7
Looked sharp in attack and solid in defence, Byrne will be ready if an emergency Wales World Cup call comes his way.

Stefan Terblanche - 5
Not a game for wingers, Terblanche may be wondering why he came back from his successful summer in South Africa.

Mark Taylor - 6
A quiet Ospreys debut, the veteran centre showed that he will be a solid midfield presence in the World Cup period.

Andrew Bishop - 7
Handling let him down at times early on, but confirmed his burgeoning reputation as a defensive powerhouse.

Aled Brew - 4
Little chance to shine on his return to Ospreys colours and had his game cut short by an ankle injury.

Shaun Connor - 7
What can you say? For 79 minutes Connor looked like he could keep James Hook on the sidelines this season, but the veteran outside-half has always just fallen short at the highest level and he fluffed his chance at glory.

Justin Marshall - 6
Looking sharp for the new season and eager to stake his claim on the Ospreys' number nine jersey in the absence of Mike Phillips.

Paul James - 4
Found himself under severe pressure at the scrum. James was in Wales' 2003 World Cup squad and looked like having a big future, but has gone backwards since.

Richard Hibbard - 7
Looked out to make a point to the Welsh selectors as he carried strongly and got into the forward arm wrestle. Line-out deteriorated when he was substituted.

Andrew Millward - 4
Needs to watch his discipline, the stalwart clubman will also have been disappointed to have come out second best at the scrum.

Brent Cockbain (capt) - 6
Mixed it up and got at opposing skipper Xavier Rush, but he found the Blues pack a tougher proposition than in last year's EDF Cup semi-final.

Mike Collins - 5
A difficult step up against an abrasive Blues second-row pairing, Collins will learn from the experience.

Andy Lloyd - 6
Did his usual hard graft on the floor.

Richard Pugh - 5
Pugh showed up well in patches, but is living on borrowed time with Marty Holah on the way.

Filo Tiatia - 6
A sharp tap-and-go penalty that nearly led to a try for Byrne was the highlight from the abrasive Kiwi.

I think I might not have mentioned Cobain, if it hadn't been for the way Marshall reacted after the "high tackle". That was the real offence to be honest. I also think you guys have a problem with Cobain as captain given that he is hardly likely to be a peace maker!

As you say both sides have a good chance, 1/2 again but reversed this time and we will be on the same side in a weeks time

Robinson didn't have that bad a game, but it definitely not his finest either. If he can pick his form up, and play like he did against Leinster in our last match of last season, then the Blues could be a dominant force. And DysynniOspreys, you say that the Blues will get flattened by the 'all powerful' Ospreys when their international and All Black return from France, you're kinda forgetting that this wasn't the best squad the Blues could field either. When the likes of Jamie Robinson, Martyn Williams, Tom Shanklin, 'Alfie' Thomas and co return to the Arms Park, it will form a pretty formidable line up. That said, the Ospreys have bought half of Wales and beyond, so they'll be hard to beat.

cockbain is a classic wind up merchant, don't think he will be capt when ryan comes back
surprised tiatia wasnt made capt but maybe it's apart of a deal to help cockbain sweet untill we get the rest of our locks back after the world cup

I think the blues ospreys and scarlets could fill the top 3 athough the irish sides will challenge stronly

Most of the Ospreys that played last night will be on sidelines after RWC, than look out Blues!
Robinson showed that he is not a international No 10. Blues need to replace him.
Ref also helped Blues with some one sided decisions.

Agreed, Thingimubob, the Blues were not at their strongest either, but still included: Blair, Rhys Williams, Nicky Robinson, Yapp, Gareth Williams, Deiniol Jones, Tito, Molitika, Sowden-Taylor and Rush ALL of whom could be called first-choice players even when you've got a full squad available. That was the difference - virtually all the Ospreys players last night were second- or even third-choice players.

As for the Ospreys signing up half of Wales and beyond, methinks you exagerate. But I hope the signings haven't finished because we definitely need some props. Now that Gethin Jenkins is a tidy player . . . biggrin

Hey Jimmy - haven't seen you on ScrumV for a while..? "Robinson had a stinker" - you think so..? I thought his kicking - for the posts and out of hand was excellent and his general distribution as well as the way he mixed up the game was good. He had one loose chip over the top at the end but I certainly wouldn't describe his game as a stinker..?
