Steve Coppell Talking On Nicky Shorey

Premier League Reading

comment on the article

Just read an interview on Readingfc.co.uk with Coppell regarding last minute transfer news. He seemed optimistic of bringing in another player, however, he stated that he wouldn't be too bothered if nothing happened. Does anyone think we need to strengthen? With alot of injuries at present, I'm hopeful of maybe a loan?

Now on to Shorey, I'm not going to sit here and say the exact same thing that has been said on 606 for the whole summer. Although what Coppell said did worry me a bit. When asked about Shorey's situation he replied; 'I can't deny West Ham have made an offer, but I look at the price of players and I consider the offer they made as being derisory, not serious'.

After reading that, I was satisfied with what was said concerning the situation, however, Coppell then proceeds to say; ' I think the player is happy at Reading, but speculation is bound to be unsettling. I hope he's playing for us on Sunday, let's see. '

I don't want to now say; 'Shorey is definately going to West Ham, they have made a 5 million pound bid and it has been accepted and Shorey is on his way to Upton Park ' - like everyone else has been, including the media. But what I will say that the last thing that Coppell said when talking about Shorey was particularly worrying.

What do people think?

Decent player but you could get a foreigner who was just as good for half the price.

Cutting out all of the sarkie banter, (Reading wont forgive West Ham for taking Pards) Shorey has been a good player for Reading and I can't argue he doesnt deserve a place in the England squad but I do not rate him as a first choice purchase for West Ham at left back.
Stay at Reading and enjoy your football

Maybe, but he's definetly miles better than a Mr G.McCartney they have currently.

Saying that if Reading can get £6m+ for Shorey, that would be a great deal for Reading, if not both clubs.

what I hate is the "it would be daft for any player to say where he will be next year" attitude. If they weren't all such overpaid money grabbing mercenaries then it would be easy to say where you would be next year, if for example you had just signed a 4 yr contract. What he means is , I'll just go where I can get most money and screw anyone else. Not sure I want him at West Ham.

@ Iron Constitution:

Can't say i'm sure i want him @ Reading if he says 'i am not sure'..

does he mean that if reading are relegated he'll leave, or if west ham give him a few thousand extra he'll leave?

Or if he decides he can't handle training near Whitley (Reading people would get this bit)he would leave..

Does sound a bit suspicious, i guess this is his way of saying "im gonna leave pretty soon, just not in the next 5mins".

To be honest a think it is alot of fuss over a average player, it was the same throughout the transfer market, massisve transfer fee's for average players.

I feel Shorey in West ham would be another great addition to west ham ...

And as he is english , it means he can have some more regular training with teammates in the england squad ...

1966 world cup , most of the players where from west ham :D

If we play an all english west ham squad in the world cup , a deffinate winner :P

HaHa Cheers lads smiley

Reading is no Arsenal to breed them and sell them. We are no poultry - let Madejeski get real and up the money a bit. But I tell you what - we are a small happy town with loyalty. That is why we spent the least intransfer market this August and will go to Europe though.

Heh heh. I'm sure Shorey would relish the chance to train with Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters etc.
