I had to flag up the fact that this Thursday (30 August) is the 70th anniversary of one of the greatest events in Welsh sporting history - Tommy Farr's challenge for Joe Louis' world heavyweight title at Yankee Stadium.
The highest-profile fight any Welshman has ever been involved in? I don't think there can be any doubt! I've been reading David Margolick's excellent book "Beyond Glory: Max Schmeling v Joe Louis" and didn't realise until then that one of the major reasons Farr landed the Louis bout was because the Americans wanted to "spike" a proposed Schmeling v Farr fight for an unofficial championship of the world.
Anyway, I've got a bit of a profile of Farr on the site at news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/box... where I've got him ranked as the seventh best Welsh fighter of all time. There's also some great archive of the Louis-Farr fight at www.bbc.co.uk/wales/walesona...
There's loads of superb archive of Farr (a character, if ever there was one!) in BBC Wales' archives and I'd love to get chance to do something with that sometime. Anyway, if anyone has comments on Louis v Farr (or memories? that might be pushing it a bit...!) I'd love to hear them.
