Powell vs Gay

comment on the article

I was very disappointed to see Powell 'give up' with 10 metres to go in the final, and subsequently cost him a silver medal, is this the kind of attitude a world record holder should be sending to the youth of today's world?

"Michael Johnson's World record 200 metre run is the fastest officially, (his 19.32 secs is the equivalent of 9.66 at 100m)"

His second 100m - i.e. when he was already at full speed - was 9.20 seconds

There's not much to add to what's already been said....

However, this is Powell's first medal at a major event. It may have been playing on his mind.

Now, having got the bronze, he will hopefully sit down, and say, this is not good enough, and go for gold in the Beijing Olympics, when he is 26.

This is not a timing for a pole position where you need to pass the starting line at full speed...

The 100m is all about starting at the line which Michael Johnson is poor at and finishing at the finish line................ so it would be hard to compare him his time to normal 100m runners

I don't think Powell has fully acknowledged the craven nature of his defeat saying he will make up by breaking the world record before the end of the year!! True champs bring out their best when it matters. He was more than capable of running better than 9.85 but couldn't deliver when the chips were down. Gay will always chase him down knowing his frailities.

He should be facing up to the fact he crumbles under pressure and working out a strategy to deal with this. Sadly I have been won over to the argument Powell will never win a major championship and fulfil his undoubted talent.

Michael Johnson could not have said it better. Anybody who watch the race saw that this guy is a quitter. The problem with Asafa is that he continues to run away from real competition. Yes he beat Tyson Gay several times last year but Tyson has never shied and as a jamaican saying goes Tyson Gay wheel and come again. The only thing going for Asafa is that he still young but right now him soft.

Am I the only one who thinks Asafa Powell didn't just 'give up'? What I saw was him realising the race was well lost and he didn't want to do the right thing. That would have been to push Tyson Gay into equalling or breaking Asafa's own World Record. Asafa Powell is selfish to the bone - now we have to wait for mankind to regroup. As far as I'm concerend the WR could have been lowered in Osaka.

Powell is by far the fastest man in the world. Yes he has not performed well at the big events but I believe him winning a meadal even bronze is going to take the Monkey off his back. I see comments about Michael Johnson being the fastest man because his 2oom split was 9.66 and his 2nd 100 was run in 9.3. Check out this stat on Carl Lewis on his 4x100m split.

Lewis won the 200 in a then-Olympic record 19.80 seconds and completed his quest by running a 8.94 anchor leg on the victorious 4x100 relay team.

Most top sprinters if you eliminate the start will run under 9 seconds in the hundred. Donovan Bailey said it best when he said Johnson's fastest 100m race from the blocks was a Pedestrian 10.1. So he surely was not the fastest man

asafa powell is the fastest man ever on two legs and will always be, but i think the only problem he has, is mentally. whenever he is in a big race with one of his rivals, he doesnt perform to his ability, instead pressuring himself to beat someone who's already beat'n. asafa just re-group and come again, and shut up all a the player haters and wagonist.
