Turkish Grand Prix - Live

Formula One
comment on the article

Morning all. Formula One is back after the mid-season break and we're all set for the 12th Grand Prix of the year in Istanbul.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa snatched pole in the dying seconds of qualifying on Saturday, just edging out Lewis Hamilton. There was nothing between the Ferraris and the McLarens in qualifying but who do you think has the edge today?

Can Fernando Alonso get his title bid back on track with victory or will Hamilton continue his fine form? Can Massa hold on or has Kimi Raikkonen got something in reserve? Will the truce between the two McLaren drivers last? Is there anyone else that can sneak onto the podium? How many drivers will come off on that notoriously difficult turn eight?

Let us know what you think.

"2008 without traction control will prove whether Lewis is really as great as the hype suggests. Personally I think he is probably the best driver out there, but it remains to be proven."

As Hamilton is GP2 2006 champion, and as far as I know GP2 does NOT have traction control, this should favour him even more.

So I agree with you he is on balance, very much looking like the best out there. And the "hype", such as it is, may in all probability be well-justified on grounds of skill alone.

I have my doubts about that!
I think what some of the more Unbiased Hamilton detractors here are saying is that he has not earned his Stars in F1 until they see him perform well in the wet. (Theres not a great amount of evidence to support LH being good in the wet so far, in fact the opposite)
With all the technology that we have in F1 there is little to differentiate between the top drivers when racing in the Dry.
In GP2 the cars are pretty much the same what with them running with similar sized budgets.
All the great drivers of the past were masters in the wet. Will LH be one of them ???
I'm patiently waiting for Spa - it nearly always rains there!

"I'm patiently waiting for Spa - it nearly always rains there!"

So am I! You're right about the rain. It ALWAYS rains in Belgium, and the Ardennes especially.

Wasn't it at Spa that Schumacher did a wheelie on Coulthard?

Honest, guv. Didn't see 'im. Couldn't even see me 'and in that muck...

Although Schumacher "lost" after the race, and looked like he wanted to knuckle old DC.

What joy to see Hamilton blow his tyre and finish fifth. The obnoxious little squealer finally got some karma. But the guy still reamins lucky. His puncture happened in the second sector and he didn't lose as many places as he could have. If it had have been Alonso or a Ferrari they would have had it happen going into the first corner, with the luck they have had this season.

So his team let him down in Germany and he crashed out heavily in qualifying, yet still raced the next day and should have picked up some points but decided to drive like a eedjit instead.

He let his team down in Hungary and refused to obey team orders causing his team mate to also play dirty and both ended up embarassing themselves and the sport. Yet he still comes out of it smelling of roses on pole, and goes on to win the race.

Now in Turkey he clearly couldn't match the Ferraris and relied on the BMWs to hold of Alonso and eventually he wrecked his tyre and it blew. Causing him to drive even more like an eedjit (dangerously and hastily) on his return to the pits.

Clearly the last three races have had Hamilton as the headline grabber and for all the wrong reasons. Infact other than the result in Hungary, four of his last five races have seen him finish outside the top 2. Yet he still remains top of the standings and still thinks he is going to win.

I hope that the Hamilton circus will finally be drawn to a close and the last five races see an all out fight for the championship. The sport needs excitement more than they need a poster boy and its excitement I want. Not a smug rookie grabbing all the headlines for simply being new and English.

LH did a really good job at the weekend, to do half a lap on 3 wheels, damage the car and still limit the loss to 5th was excelent. LH has consistently made the best of even the worst situations. As for traction control, this is probably the first ever racing season he has had traction control so loosing it next year will be an advantage comparet to FA anf KR who have both been using F1 traction control for years.

culna77 - I'm not sure what game he's playing. He's either taking the p... out of the anti-Hamilton loons, or he really means it: in which case you're absolutely right, and he's being deliberately nasty about Hamilton, for the reason you have given. If that is the case, like you, I hope Hamilton continues to ruin his day.

The poster name looks like a make-up from the German - "fahrverbot". roughly. no licence to drive. Heeeavvy humour, man...

andrew - quite correct. As I said above, loss of tracrion control is not going to worry LH. And Alonso should just live with being beaten by the rookie. or fight back without resort to his "trainer" to help him, and stop throwing his dummy!

In short, he should behave like a 2-WDC who desrves to be. Right now, he behaves like one that has won by default.

When his only hope is to pray for something to happen to Hamilton...

Nuff said.

Or more strongly, forbidden to drive. Probably what he'd like for Hamilton.

Oh the "Ostalgie".
