Day two in Japan

comment on the article

That's it the end of another day of track and field action in Japan, and that was a pretty exciting day all in all.

The big question was answered.

Tyson Gay is the new 100m world champion, as his main rival Asafa Powell trailed home in third.

How much of a surprise was that? Is Gay the best sprinter in the world right now or does Powell simply struggle at the major championships?

Marlon Devonish came home sixth. The 31-year-old was not selected for the 200m but should he have been allowed to double up?

The British camp came nearer to their target of three medals as Kelly Sotherton claimed bronze in the heptathlon with a storming 800m.

A very solid performance from the 30-year-old edged out team-mate Jessica Ennis to fourth.

It's only day two in Osaka but plenty to discuss. Your thoughts please.

Yeah, Bailey was a great sprinter, of course the media will always talk their nationalistic crap. It's a pity Bailey had so many problems with injuries as he would have gone fasterand he was a bloody good bloke aswell. ok

Cardover,

You can say FACT all you want but until Powell does it when it counts he will be another Leroy Burrell. The WR is one thing, but people remember the Champions. How many more times is Powell going to fail to impress? IMO he will never win a World or Olympic gold.

4. I don't understand the stick MLF gets. He's our 3rd best runner, so he runs. He out performed Pickering but that seems to have gone un-noticed.

its irrelevant that he out performed pickering. pickering is only 20, at his first senior champs and was sent sent essentially to gain experience. MLF has been around a while, and has/had the talent to be up there with gay and powell and he has wasted it time and again. look at the british trials, MLF was lucky to be selected anyway. as for brendan foster making "snide remarks"... he is merely calling as he sees it, and rightly so. I'm not sure i agree that he is finished, however, but it is going to be very difficult for him to make a mark on the world stage now. putting in the hard yards and losing sonme weight would be a start though.

I'm a Jamaican and here in his homeland we all feel it for Asafa. But I will be impartial.

What Asafa did this morning was the epitome of 'choking' in sports.

Not only did he choke, but he did so on one of the biggest stages, at the final of the world championships.

IMO MLF and Andrew Lemoncello dont deserve one cent of funding, they both perfomed pitifully today, well MLF tried but was once again found out to be a bottler, Lemoncello didn't even try. That was probably the worse performance by any british athlete in any championships ever. These guys ought to be paid on a performance basis after the events, taking into consideration age and experience. There will be a few more disappointments tomorrow too.Thank god for Kelly Southerton and Jessiaca Ennis today.

First, Lemoncello was coming from illness and wasn 't physically strong enough to cope with the race, even more so under the given conditions. He has had an excellent season so far.
Mark Lewis-Francis may have not done anything spectacular so far, but I think this has to be his best season since 2002 in terms of results and consistency. He has taken a few solid steps forward this season but he will have to make the transition to a top sprinter next season, as the longer it takes the more frustration is going to heap on him.

As concerns the second day of the championships, Britain very much carried on from where they were left off yesterday to move up a gear into their first medal through Kelly Sotherton and two more top 8 positions.
I am really pleased that most British athletes have risen to the occasion, producing PBs or SBs and making good progress on the big stage. It is the attitude required to move forward and restore the sport to its old glamour.
Kelly Sotherton and Jessica Ennis were magnificent today, while I was very pleased with the promise showed by Nicola Sanders and Christine Ohuruogu.
Tomorrow, hopefully, it 's going to be Phillips Idowu 's day...

It's not just the lottery "life style" money it's all the add on maintenance cost for support/coach payment/medical/warm weather training abroad. Someone else wrote somewhere it amounted to around £500.000.

But don't be too hard on MFL. He was one of the 4x100 gold winning team in Athens and he was only 1/100th off making the final here. Undoubtedly he's been a comfortable, underperforming passenger with UKA for most of the time but hey, they got have some athletes to look after.
