What a game

Very much end to end stuff, first of all i'm impressed with Sunderland they tirelessly work for the whole 90 minutes closing the opposition down very well, first half we barely had an inch of room to work in

Now on to us, we played really good football, Torres was a real bright spark again bursting through with pace, and I feel had Sunderland not had such an amazing goalkeeper in between the posts it could well have been a bigger scoreline, if anyone should get man of the match it's probably Craig Gordon

Pennant was a thorn in their side quite often also showing great balance when challenges came in and going past the wingbacks

plenty of positives in this match, discuss what you felt was your positive.

I think its also worth makng a comparison between ours and Spur's performances against them.

Spurs had a lot of possetion in that match, yet the 'best strikeforce in England' couldn't cut them open.

We were without key players, had injuries to our CBs and kept possetion fairly poorly...yet we won 2-0.

We have every right to be positive...early though it be.

Although scoring two fantastic goals, Liverpool's midfield slightly fell apart without Gerrard. Alonso wasn't in his usual great form, and Babel didn't really get into the, game, although when he did have possession he was great. And I don't see, although getting his first Liverpool goal, how Momo Sissoko got man of the match compared to Pennant and Torres.

I am quite dissapointed with Sunderland's defence (except for McShane). They were quite poor. Craig Gordon made some fantastic saves, and had nearly no chance of stopping the goals.

But Overall i think both teams did well, great start for Voronin. But I think the best team won today

"Alonso wasn't in his usual great form, and Babel didn't really get into the game"

The first largely causes the second. I only saw the second half but it struck me that Torres hardly saw the ball either...he made his chances out of nothing.

Don't get me wrong, on top form Alonso's peerless...but his place isn't sacred. He has been on largely indifferent form for a while now, and I feel that Mash would have picked out the likes of Torres, Babel and Pennant with much more efficiency today.

That said, its fantastic we can lose the ball as we did today, and still win 2-0.

I also like the fact that our second goal was came from a break. Yes we might have finished it sooner, but the second they started coming forward in search of the equaliser we tore them apart on the counter and killed the game.

Man U supporter here... big Roy Keane fan.
1. Think Sunderland are still finding their feet and have a very tough start to the season. That will stand them well.
2. Liverpool are a definate contender esp. with the quality of the signings. Will see a different European team to the Premiership team (signings are suited to the premiership).
3. Eventhough I hoped for a draw last week I was disgusted with the decision that went to Chelsea, We all want fair play. Glad Heinze didn't get to go to Liverpool.
4. We are not out of it yet.

ZeMaestro, I agree with you on the merits of Gordon as a keeper. We could have won this match 4-0 if he'd not made some excellent saves.

I too thought we played fairly well. We had lots of time on the ball, and controlled their attack well, although the fact that Chopra kept breaking through with seeming ease would have been a worry if he was getting the service. Sunderland looks a decent side, and I think they might surprise a few clubs this year.

Pennant had a good outing, but he did give the ball away somewhat cheaply on occasion, (and he wasn't the only one!) so that is still a concern for me.

I like Torres more and more every time I see him, and I hope that he continues his active play. I think I would have taken him off around 70 or 75 mind you, because began to tire IMO. I think Voronin needs to be kept in the side when possible, because he needs more experience with our style of play, and he'll begin to connect on more of his passes. I loved his goal. Great to see Momo have a good match, and to score his first goal star. Babel was not at his best today, so perhaps he's not ready to start just yet.

Carra made some great clearances, and I really hope it's not a broken rib, as we'd miss him terribly.

Good to see that we could control the match (and win it) even without Gerrard, so that is also a positive for me. I kept thinking that this was the kind of scrappy away contest that we'd have drawn (or lost!) last year, so I'm hopeful that we've turned a corner on our away form.

All in all, a good result, and if our finishing would match our chances (we had double figures of shots on target, I believe) , we'll do well this season.

Good effort by Sunderland...but the truth is, they simply don't have the players to compete with the likes of the Pool.

You're right of course, but I was impressed with Sunderland's work rate.
I've been a Keane critic, but I'm sure his players don't want to be on the wrong end of his wrath, which is why they'll have to give their all.
I think Sunderland will struggle, but their home from is going to be important for them if they're going to stay up.

Yesterday's performance showed how important Gerrard is to Liverpool.
However, Torres and Voronin looked good together and there's always Kuyt.
I think Crouch is probably 4th in the pecking order now.
Liverpool have started recent seasons believing they can make a good challenge, but have
started poorly and have to play catch up.
This could be a much better season for them, but Man U and Chelsea will still be the ones to get in front of, and I wouldn't ignore Arsenal either.

A very, very good win by Liverpool! They really are in good shape and on the good run if they want to win te League. Let's just hope it's not too bad news for Carra and Sammy. But as a fan I am very, very pleased by the way they are playing at the moment. Torres, Babel and Voronin already prove they are very good transfers and they will be really important players for us in hopefully a long season.
