Gearing up for World Rowing Champs

comment on the article
Great Britain's coxless four aim to defend their title

I’m still trying to get my head around revelations this week that Great Britain’s coxless four have made major technical changes ahead of the World Rowing Championships.

It is a major gamble by coach Jurgen Grobler, although again not a major surprise given his record for gambles.

But it explains the below-par performance of a crew previously unbeaten in 27 major races in the last World Cup regatta in Lucerne, where Tom James subbed in for the injured Alex Partridge

There is still a year to go before the Olympics and Grobler knows the four’s rivals will only get quicker. If he was to make a change, now is about the last time he could do it.

GB’s other big prospect this week will be the women’s quad, although their defeat to China in Amsterdam will have them worrying a little going into the rematch.

It will be interesting to see whether the improvement in the lightweight squad in the World Cup this year - credited to the work of coach Robin Williams – will translate into the World Champs.

Matt Wells and Stephen Rowbotham should be a good bet for a medal in the men’s doubles and I’m intrigued by the women’s combination of Anna Bebington and Elise Laverick, who came fourth in Lucerne in their first race together after Bebington’s return from injury.

My favourite event for the last couple of years, though, has been the single sculls.

Coleraine’s Alan Campbell has been part of a gladiatorial competition with the likes of Kiwi Mahe Drysdale – his Tideway Scullers training partner - Czech World Cup winner Ondrej Synek, Olympics champion Olaf Tufte and German Marcel Hacker.

What will you be watching this week and who do you tip for medals?

We'll be 'watching' on-line from Australia as Team GB strive for Beijing qualification spots. Trust me - Jurgen sure knows his stuff - and this time next week our M4- will be standing tall on that medal podium. winkeye

what technical changes????
Is it something to do with the run of the boat, because last time I saw them they weren't running as well as some of the other boats, just that their power and fitness carried them through......

"If he was to make a change, now is about the last time he could do it."

Shows what you know of the sport of rowing Mr Gough. The time between Lucerne and Munich was time enough to make some significant changes in technique and also the coxless four have all of next winter to change. Plenty of time before Beijing, although it will obviuosly take a lot of effort and focus.

As for badababong, watch the 4, they actually do the only important parts of the stroke well, ie put it in, connect where they put it in and then push on it very hard for a long time.

Rowing is a simple sport made to complicated by to many coaches. (the hard bit is doing these bits well under race pressure 36-40 times/ min for 6 mins!)

I think comparing the crew as it is now to the regatta in Lucerne is a bit of a pointless exercise. A boat acts differently and you will row differently when one of the crew is changed a week or two before the race, and no matter how good you are, when you have these changes you won't perform as well when rowing in a world class race.

As far as the technical changes go, the comment in the article of 'I’m still trying to get my head around revelations this week that Great Britain’s coxless four have made major technical changes' I think is far-fetched, as in training you are always trying to get the technique completely right - I would consider a major technical change as a move around in the crew order or the rigging and that doesn't look to have changed.

On another point altogether - I hope Alan Campbell manages to reproduce his Henley final performance and stuff his old training partner Mahe.

kwikscull, are you sure I don't coach you? You sound critical enough to be one of mine.

Sheffieldrower, there was a diagram in the Guardian, compiled by Martin Cross, which explains the change they've made, opening the back later in the drive phase than they had been doing previously. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available online.

Campbell faster than Drysdale today, although you never know how much powder is being kept dry. Trying to recall whether Campbell has ever won a multilane race against Mahe.

Why no news of the Russian rowers doping on the news. My sport (cycling) is all over the BBC when it comes to these matters. Is it because cycling isn't shown on the BBC and rowing is?

Stuart.

I'm afraid i don't recall you coaching me Mr Gough!! Although you never know, depends where you have coached! Anyway I'm not critical, just challenging!!

My point is that six weeks is enough time to make major advancments. Obviuosly more time is better and that will I am sure be a focus over the winter.

And I think the singles will be a great race, in fact so will the mens and womens doubles. I'm looking forward to those.

Perhaps you'll be out in Munich and we can discuss it over a German Beer when i get there tomorow?! smiley

Cant believe some of the results here, thought i'd watch and listened to Steve Redgraves optimism, bit disappointed, was expecting loads of medals. Been a tough long season and think these rowers need a month away somewhere to unwind. Get the timing right for Beijing and i think we'll do better.
