England's number one?

Just who should play in goal for England when the crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia take place in a couple of week's time?

Is Paul Robinson still the man despite his error against Russia? Is all the criticism a storm in a team cup?

Or is it time to bring back David James to the big time after he returned for 45 minutes during Wednesday's friendly?

Or maybe time for one of the young guns - Scott Carson perhaps?

Let us know what you think.

Chris Kirkland should be given a chance. You won't see him making the calamitous errors that Robinson and James are prone to making.

david james should be the no1 keeper....he has had the best form of all english keepers this season and last. green or kirkland should be the no2.kasper schmichael will be england keeper in a few years....not yet not experienced yet.

Right now James is the better of the two but I will have to say Robinson should play. He has to be capped internationally to get the expeicence. We need a young keeper going forward. James can always be the reserve keeper except for decider matches where expericence and a cool head is required.

Why is no-one even mentioning Steve Harper. He's a top class keeper, playing regularly for Newcastle now. He could wakl in as first choice keeper at any number of premiership teams yet has sacrificed himself for the toon. The guy is a legend and certainly a better bet than Schmeichel or half those mentioned.

Another thing about Steve Harper "only being Given's understudy".

It's all about ability. I bet if Cudicini was English he would be in the squad even if "only" Petr Cech's understudy.

As a Newcastle fan I am baffled that Steve Harper has not been mentioned he is a very good goalkeeper and if it were not for Shay keeping him out or if he had went to another club he would no doubt be an England regular he is much better than Robinson and Harper has started the season in good form come on Mc Claren wake up and check out Harper he might save you your job. HARPER FOR ENGLAND

Anyone who thinks young Schmeichel should be England's no1 should be careful what they wish for. He's a reasonably good, very young and very inexperienced keeper.
I saw a lot of him when he was on loan at Falkirk last season, and he was alright, but no better than that. He had some decent stops, but was just a reasonable SPL goalie. He's had a good start to the season, but I think he's had a bit of luck (which all keepers need, admittedly) and he's a LONG way short of the finished article.
And it might be unfair of me to say this, but I don't think he'll ever be a patch on his old man.
