Time to drop 'misses' Robinson!

Derek 'Robbo' Robson

Paul Robinson - take a break. Have you ever seen an England goalie so at sea?

He's got to carry the can for England's first defeat at the new Wembley - except I doubt he'd be able to hold on to it. The flap for the first German goal was pure comedy. He went for the ball like a handcuffed man leaning off a stepladder and cannot be allowed to continue.

His replacement will be the best keeper in the Premiership season of 2006-07 - David James. Funny how that conclusive fact fills me with dread.

But who else is there? Not Jens Lehmann, even if he qualified through residency. The bloke looks more and more like a bewildered Dave Beasant.

He spent the evening handing out pressies to England's premier goal-hanger, who spent a couple of hours trying to unwrap each one of them. Presumably Owen needs a game or two. But we've been saying that for what feels like a decade.

And Becks looked unfit and a tad jaded - hardly surprising given all the air miles he's been clocking up.

Just a question but does he have to take ALL the free-kicks? Is it a contractual obligation? If, say, Lampard lined up one of his 30-yard bagatelle efforts, would Becks be legally entitled to pick up the ball and mince off?

The rest of the game had some pluses for England. Lamps was lively but Gerrard wasn't on the pitch so he knew what his job was. More evidence for my continued assertion that the two of them can't share the same turf. Lampard should be England's best sub.

Joe Cole was grand. Gone are the days when he used to get knocked off the ball by the breath of the average centre back. He's fast, tricky and was the main reason we got a few chances together.

The lad Richards was great 'n' all - but why stick him at centre half after the break when he'd done so much good work at right back? Wes Brown has about as much flair as drainpipe trousers.

SWP is back to his best and scared the pants of them when he came on. And the team created chances, which to be fair has been a rarity recently.

Certainly Mr Brown and Ms Merkel seemed to have a good evening. Well England lost, didn't they, so why wouldn't they be pleased?

I thought the Germans were a bit cheeky to wear England's '66 World Cup winning kit. And what does the German coach look like, eh? With the girly scarf and the new Romantic hairdo he could be some wunderkind classical musician. I kept expecting him to run out from the dug-out and get a cello out.

The worst aspect of last night was watching the game with my son Darren and his girlfriend Claudia - from Baden Baden. I bit me tongue so many times in 90 minutes that I developed a serious lisp.

Even then, most of my derision was reserved for the boys in white. As was hers, to be fair.

"Who is this substitute?" she asked at one point.
"Dyer" I replied.
"Dire?!" said she....
Well, I couldn't have put it better meself, pet.

read in the paper that michael carrick, ferdinand and robinson are going to be dropped from the next squad.

Personally i think that is a bit harsh on all of them as they are definately good enough to get into the England squad. Granted Robinson should be dropped as a first choice keeper as he has made too many mistakes but he should definately be our sub. I would love to drop him completely considering the errors he has made but, lets face it, we do not have 3 english goalkeepers who are better than him.
As for carrick, definately not a starter just yet, but no reason why he should not be picked for England as he is a handy option to have on the bench.

But the biggest surprise is the ommission of Rio. Granted before the world cup he should have been benched, but recently John Terry seems to have been making more mistakes than him but nobody seems to be realising that. JT has in recent matches given the ball away too many times with bad passes / clearances and, up until the Germany goal, got away with it. I am not saying JT should be dropped, but neither should Rio, because, when fully fit, the defensive partnership of Neville, Rio, Terry and cole is one of the best in the world. That defence kept a clean sheet during a terrible world cup campaign in 4 out of the 5 matches England played.

Robinson is the best we have, give him a chance!! i cant see anyone else stepping in his shoes, especially grandad James.

And Re: midland Gooner
I think this is tej most talented squad we have had for years. The fact that we are arguing about who should play where, makes it clear that we have so much competition for places-

GK robinson, kirkland, carson, james foster?
CD- woodgate, Rio, terry, richards, campbell
Fullbacks- Nevillex2, brown, shorey, cole, bridge, baines

CM- Lampard, Gerrard, hargreaves,carrick,
Wingers- becks, SWF, Cole, Lennon, barry, downing

ST- crouch, owen, rooney, bent, defoe, johnson

When all fit, we have the best squad to pick from!

The players need to start playing as a team magic

Robbo, this article lacks the usual timid humor. What you said about Becks looking 'unfit', you're probably the only sports 'writer' to say so. On another note, I heard the display cartoon on your columns looks much better than your real picture...have you noticed the cartoon looks like it is pushing it's chin up with a hammer...okay may be it's just me.

MaNUTdsaha

Ow Glory Hunter, it must be confusing for the prawn sarnie brigade to be languishing 16th in the table (two places below the Mighty Boro) so why don't you change allegiances, say to Chelsea or City then you can start your superior, arrogant crowing again? Then at least we can understand what you're saying.

i totally agree with everything you said Robbo.
Robinson had a shocker, i was laughing my self to death with horror at the sight of their first goal, and that scorcher made things worse. McLaren has some selection problems really.
