A hard fought victory from a makeshift Scotland gave Alex Mcleish another victory to add to his burgeoning Scotland Managerial career. It looked unlikely however after a first half dominated largely by the South African midfield, although they created little in the way of clear cut opportunities.

The second half began brighter however and Scotland scored a cracking goal after a fine passing move ended with Kris Boyd running onto a Darren Fletcher through ball. Boyd fired in a controlled finish to send the tartan army into raptures.

There were a couple of players who did their chances no harm of making the team in next months double header against Lithuania and France, most notably Jay McEveley who foraged well down the left flank.

The battling performance will please Alex McLeish, Scotland winning whilst playing below par. Berti Who.........?

Team list
Scotland: Gordon, Hutton, Anderson, McManus, McEveley, Brown, Caldwell, Fletcher, McFadden, O'Connor, Miller. Subs: Neil Alexander, Graham Alexander, Berra, Pearson, Robson, Teale, Beattie, Boyd, Maloney, Marshall.

South Africa: Fernandez, Nzama, Mokoena, Mhlongo, Carnell, Pienaar, Zothwane, Sibaya, Buckley, Nkosi, Zuma. Subs: Marlin, Mere, Fransman, Evans, Modise, Vilakazi, Nomvethe, Dikgacoi,

Id like to ask the Editor of the BBC sports pages, or the jouralist who wrote the match report what they mean by 'unlikely' victory. Did the (presumably english) jouralist expect Scotland to lose and if so why? SA are ranked 60-odd by FIFA.

another insult from the english !
aberdeen is never a inspirational place to play internationals , scotland need a decent crowd to get behind them , next time try morton !

SA WAS TOO BIG FOR SCOTTISH PLAYERS BUT WERE LET DOWN BY POOR FINISHING. I LIKED THE WAY FLECTHER CONTROLLED THAT MIDFIELD THOU HE DIDNT HAVE GOOD BACKUP. SOUTHH AFRICA WAS BETTER THAN SCOTLAND ON THE DAY.

SA was better for the first half not the whole game. the second half was very even and Scotland scored a great goal. SA still didn't have many chances in our box so you can't blame it on finishing unless you always rely on long shots.

And yes des res the aim is to score goals but in this country we seem to drive forward and try and score at every opurtunity, This not only knackers our teams out after 70 mins but lets our opposition hit us on the break all day long. If we tried playing the ball around for 5-10 mins at a time like good european sides do we'd fare far better. But then with guys like caldwell who can barely make ten yard passes maybe it is too much to ask. Ferguson and Fletcher are more than good enough to play this kind of possession football. I just think the likes of Fletcher needs to keep his head on and not try and be a hero all day by trying to play killer passes every time he has the ball. It's a lot less tiring when you are in possession as well as opposed to when you are chasing shadows because you keep giving it away. The crowds have their part to play to and should be more patient. Crowds in Scotland practically boo if you don't pass the ball forward with every touch. This is not productive and forces mistakes from their own team. Also IF we actually get to a major tournament it will be summer and it will be difficult to play our game for 90 mins or 120mins if necessary. We should be looking at conserving energy during the game. Although I must say the Scottish players are looking physically fitter than they have for a while. Even Boydy has lost the tires.

What i meant was that after the first half, the more likely team to win was SA as they had controlled the game up to that point.

After we changed our formation the result was never in doubt(!)

also ntengasm, that was not a full Scotland team. That back four apart from maybe McManus has not started a competitive game. We missed our captain and top midfielder in Ferguson and played a few players out of position so to underperform in the first half was not a huge surprise. I am confident a full Scotland team would beat south africa by more than a goal normally.

Scotland were pants!!
SA should have walked all over them, they dominated the midfield and their passing game was silky and skillfull with a lot of flair.

If SA had the services of Benni Mcarthy, Scotland would have been buried under an avalanche of goals.

As it is, poor finishing from SA saved Scotland.

All in all, I was not impressed with Scotland. They don't have any gameplay.............they just run & chase hard and hope for the best.

That won't be good enough when they meet top class sides!!

So Magnumboots Scotland were pants and SA with Ben McCarthy would have scored an avalanche of goals, what a load of utter nonsense, yes Scotland were not great but neither were SA, and may i remind you just in case you have forgotten what football is all about, GOALS, GOALS, GOALS, GOALS that's what counts, we scored they didn't 1 - 0 we win they lost, just like France at Hampden.
