An Olympic Sport?

comment on the article

it is with disbelief as I flick through the 'today in pictures' column of the BBC web page....

Oh, great we have some olympic cycling photos.

BMX?!!!

Where did they get into an Olympic Sport?

over little bumps that look more like a kiddies play ground... What do they need the helmets for? Do they do this in tune to Rap Music too?

C'mon....

"Excuse me son, could you oblige and pee into this pot for a sample. Thanks."

Someone is defintely taking the "drug sample"...

On the plus side, in Shanaze Reade we have the current BMX World Title holder and along with Victoria Pendleton she is also the current Womens 500m Team Sprint World Title holder.

On the down side, to make way for BMX the men's kilometre time trial, in which Chris Hoy won gold in Athens, is gone.

It was included in place of the kilo event, which I personally found confusing since BMX won't take place on the track so surely there's no problem about scheduling? Anyway I think BMX is very much a worthwhile sport for the Olympics, since it involves considerable skill, strength and guts to race, the proof of which can be seen by the number of BMXers who've crossed over successfully into track racing. Certainly I prefer those kind of sports to ones that rely on subjective scoring like Gymnastics.

I was going to take up BMX again but felt "a bit Nathan Barley" considering getting a secondhand Raleigh Burner from somewhere as a 30-something bloke. Then again Jamie Staff isn't much younger than me and he stillrides on occasion while coaching the GB hopefuls. If form is any guide then Britain could have an Olympic and World Champ this time next year.

From what I remember of racing BMXs as a kid it's downright brutal and every bit as tough as road racing. The key is in the start, much like some track events and those "little bumps" are anything but when you're trying to hurtle over them at full tilt and land the jumps.

I thought I was the only one who didn't do any work, whilst trawling the web pages for something of interest....

We digress....

I was merely pointing out that the connection with BMX 'racing', was a little far fetched and was resembling more of a childrens pastime. The last bit about drugs testing was a relation to the last few weeks of the Tour... etc....

Follow?

So with kids on BMX bikes, cycling drugs testing....

British humour chaps and chapetts...?

Supposed to be funny.

C'mon Cycling buffs, or you'll be taking more stick from the footy fans this next year. Lighten up!

It was meant to be witty.

Nearly as funny as T-Mobile in Tour of Britain. Where is Britain anyway?

Holiday? I live here...

My dad, who is somewhere in his Mid 70's still rides, he's off to Majorca training camp this next month.... must be mad! He's only just discovered Email. Take it easy old fella.

What I'd like to see in Cycling is a serious makeover! Get a little credability back into this sport we all love.

Now that I live abroad, anything remotely British be it Cycling or Football or what ever is good by me. Roll on next year.... 2008

There are some serious doubts about Cyclists performances, and by this I mean, what are they on? The BMX poke was more a bit of fun. You are dealing with someone who when knocked off their bike in the middle of winter had to explain to the nurse at the hospital why I was wearing my girlfriends 30 denier tights! Very comfortable they were too.

This drug test thing needs to be more open to the public at large.

I get a bit miffed when I log on this web site and scroll down to find Cycling in between Horse riding, and Disability sports. In fact isn't that political incorrectness by the BBC. Shouldn't that read Special Needs... More scandal!!! Oooh aaah!

What ever next?rose

Ps. What is the Time Trials Council's 10 junior record these days? Just out of interest. I did a 21.35 behind Ex-pro Lloydy, on a course with 2 sets of traffic lights. He didn't get stopped.

bmx is fine as an olympic sport, team hoodies, red white and blue acne, and when we come 2nd we can claim "its not fair' in true teenager fashion. also teenagers on bmx bikes seems fine same with sketboards but adults on them , 30 yr old blokes dressed in daft baggy shorts trying tolook like teenagers! they will seem ridiculous.! athletic prowess is one thing but sulking and snogging at the end of olympics disco is another. why dont we get a boyband to open the show and Ant & Dec to give out the medals. and all floodlit events can have that clown westwood talking in his made up voice. brilliant, glad the games have such universal inclusion. lol

Bumps that look more like a kiddies Playground?

Dude, if you don't have the slightest idea what BMX Racing is, you shouldn't comment on it. Last weekend there was a Race on the Olympic BMX Racetrack in Beijing.
Feel free and watch some of these Clips from last weekends Race and tell me if you still think that this is a Kids Playground.

I'm really getting sick of People asking me why I'm still riding BMX. Most People don't even know what BMX Racing is.

Kind of like their putting snow boarding in the Winter Olympics. I don't agree with it, but there it is. Maybe they launch some sort of petition to get these sports in.

Even then, when I see medals for snow boarding or beach volleyball; it's humdrum compared to your "real" sports as far as I'm concerned, javelin throwing etc.
