Durham v Hampshire player ratings

County cricket
comment on the article

Here are my ratings from Lord's - let me know what you think.

DURHAM

Michael Di Venuto – Played the supporting role to Mustard early on before succumbing to a superb catch by Carberry - 6

Phil Mustard – The big-hitting stumper did his hopes of an England call-up no harm at all as his 49 off 38 balls gave Durham the perfect start - 8

Kyle Coetzer – The Scot supported Mustard and then Chanderpaul well with some fluent strokes, including a six off Ervine into the Grandstand - 7

Shivnarine Chanderpaul – A complete range of strokes from the delicate dab to the bludgeoned slog-swept six in a breathtaking innings, before he was cruelly run out. Did not field for much of the Hants innings - 8

Paul Collingwood – Out of sorts with the bat, looked haunted by the Chanderpaul run-out, and scratched around before holing out – but bowled well took the vital wickets of Crawley and Pothas and finished with 3-33. Batting 5, bowling 7, so he gets a – 6

Dale Benkenstein – Lucky to see an inside edge flash part the stumps while on nought, but hit three huge sixes and five fours, and scampered plenty of singles to push the score past 300 and marshalled his bowling attack well - 8

Ottis Gibson (STAR MAN) – Cameo innings of 15 off seven balls preceded a dream start for Hampshire’s nemesis with the new ball, taking two wickets with his first two balls and a third soon after - 9

Gareth Breese – Not needed to bat after his predecessors’ heroics, and failed to make a breakthrough in his three expensive overs of off-spin - 5

Liam Plunkett – Bowled four expensive overs early on as John Crawley made hay against him, but bowled better on Sunday and picked up three wickets as Hants crumbled – 7

Graham Onions – Replaced the injured Harmison and came on as first change, but ended the dangerous Crawley-Carberry partnership by bowling the latter - 6

Neil Killeen – Bowled a tidy but wicketless early spell as new-ball partner Gibson did the damage – 6

HAMPSHIRE

Michael Lumb – A final to forget as the ex-Yorkshire batsman edged to second slip off the first ball of the Hampshire innings – 4

John Crawley – Saw two wickets fall before he had faced a ball, but dug in to score 68 before being bowled by Collingwood as Hampshire’s realistic hopes departed with him - 7

Sean Ervine – Took some punishment with the ball although picked up the wicket of Coetzer, but then fell for a golden duck in identical circumstances to Lumb - 5

Kevin Pietersen – Came in to face the third ball of the innings at 0-2 but never looked in his usual dominant one-day form, and became Gibson’s third victim - 6

Michael Carberry – Fielded superbly, took a stunning catch to dismiss Di Venuto and ran Chanderpaul out, and later added 58 with Crawley - 7

Nic Pothas – Kept tidily as ever, came in at 75-4 and scored briskly, making 47 off 52 balls, but holed out on Sunday morning while trying to advance the run-rate - 7

Dimitri Mascarenhas – Usually used by Hampshire to keep it tight in mid-innings but did not bowl with his usual economy, and was bowled going for a wild slog - 5

Shane Warne – Surprised some by choosing to field first, but was wicketless as Durham refused to take risks off his bowling. Defiant to the last with the bat before he was bowled as Durham won the trophy - 6

Chris Tremlett – Wicketless - was unlucky with a early LBW shout against Chanderpaul, but took some punishment from veteran Gibson in his final over and was out for a duck - 5

Daren Powell – The Windies paceman claimed the wicket of Collingwood but had no answer to Benkenstein’s aggressive hitting in the final over, and was out for one as Durham applied the last rites – 6

James Bruce – Preferred to spinner Shaun Udal, took the vital wicket of Mustard and was Hampshire’s most economical seamer. The game was lost by the time he batted - 6

What do you think?

Agree entirely re: KP - 2 or 3 at most. Added to his negligible contribution with bat and ball, he also seemed to get under the skin of Warne and Pothas midway through the Durham innings. We were at Lords so I didn't catch the incident fully (no commentary, patchy replays and I coming back from the bar), but my mates seemed to think it was due to a petulant throw by KP to the keeper when Durham were making hay. Big-Match Player?? Big-Time Charlie more like!!!

Anyway, the most important statistic is the big, shiny silver one sitting in the Riverside. Open-top bus parade down Chester-le-Street Front Street please!!

Can I just point out that Phil Mustard hit more runs than any of Hampshire's batsmen (Crawley excepted) and did so at a rate that no Hampshire player came close to reaching, so any one saying that Mustard didn't deserve at least a 9 (He also kept wicket brilliantly remember)either wasnt paying attention to the game or lives in southampton.

Amazing incident that - though I can't remember who was batting at the time. Anyway, a gentle push to KP at cover, and KP hurls it wide of Prior who makes a fantastic stop. Almost as if KP was trying to give away four overthrows.

Not sure why Lumb gets a 4, though. He didn't do anything particularly noteworthy in the field, and he lasted one ball when Hampshire batted. Pretty much of a non-contribution, really.

Re: Phil Mustard. His contribution with the bat was stunning, but as Davidneibig has pointed out, he kept superbly. No byes at all, despite standing up to the likes of Onions, Gibson and Killeen. Didn't notice Prior standing up, except to Warne.

It was Pothas behind the stumps for Hampshire, not Prior (Sussex), but I agree with your point. It will be interesting to see whether Prior has the confidence or ability to stand up to bowlers of a comparable pace to Onions & co during the England-India one-dayers. I suspect not! While I think that Mustard's batting is still a bit raw for test cricket, surely his keeping is up-to-scratch and his batting would be well suited to one-day internationals.

How can you give Ottis only 9? What did he do wrong? He deserves 11 out of 10 for his heroics in this match, and a knighthood for his contributions to the game for almost two decades. biggrincool

All the durham players contributed in their own way, breese may not have been at his most effetive with the ball, but he was as good as ever in the field, which helped keep the pressure on. I can't see how any Durham player deserved less than a 6, and most of those with 6 contributed more than that. KP was also a valuable player for Durham... winkeye
As for Mustard, for selfish reasons I'd like to see him given more time to develop his game at county level - apparently he has plans to play in India over winter to work on playing and keeping against spin, let some of the other counties do their bit for england for now

Apologies - I made the same mistake in each of my postings. Of course it was Pothas keeping for Hampshire. But I still didn't see him standing up (apart from when Warne was bowling), and I too would be interested to see whether Prior will stand up to e.g. Mascarenhas, or even Colly, for whom Mustard almost always stands up.
