Your Favourite F1 Cars

Formula One

I'm sure there must have been an article like this before at some point as it seems like a fairly inevitable question. But no harm in giving it another run eh?

So, simply as the title states, what are your favourite F1 cars of the last half-century or so, be it because of their records, style or ingenuity.

I'll have to kick things off with the one-hit-wonder Brabham BT46B. As ridiculous as it was effective, it obliterated the rest of the grid in the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix, before being promptly banned.

Gordon, your right, if we all agreed, it would be a sad world!

"As has been pointed out on this thread, it's all horses for courses. I stand by my preference for the fully pannier-ed up D50." I liked the Ferrari version, with the empty panniers, but when they were faired in, not when they were removed. For the same reason the original BT42 and BT44/44B looked "finished", no last minute add ons. My choice of the Lotus 91 includes the "little ear" air box, which although an add on, looked right, well to me anyway! It was completely cocked up when they shoe horned a Renault lump in and called it a 92!
Funny how so many of these choices are affected by the colour scheme!! The JPS 72, much better than the GLTL 72, The original all carbon Jordan 191 (was it a 911 then?) looked awesome, but not quite so good in green. Hell even the Arrows looked good when it was all black!!

Worst looking F1? Arrows A2 "doodlebug", Lotus 80, Kaushen, Lotus 77 "adjuster car", Efiland March, and the first Maki, what was that!!!??

Best F1 cars

50s 250F (nuff said)

60s Eagle (loved the shaped nose and as for the pan pipe exhausts !!)

70s Brabham BT 44 in Martini white (simple elegant and effective)

80s Lotus 98T (toss up between this and brabham BT55, but any list of the best looking F1 cars must have a Lotus in it !!)

90s Mclaren MP4/13 in Orange Testing colours

00s Can't tell....they all look the same !!

And now the worst....

50s Mercedes streamliner (If you can't see the wheels its not a proper F1 car in my book)

60s Lotus 68 (only looked good in BRG)

70s Ferrari T4 (so many to choose from in this era, but that car looked like a lawn mower)

80s Toleman TG181 Belgrano (sorry, I know that many of you hold this car in high effection, esp what derek warwick did with it a B Hatch in 1982...but really it was an eyesore )

90s Any Benetton....

00s Williams FW25 Walrus (ugly ugly ugly....and slow too)

"" Depailler just got on with it! ""

I am not a Franco-phile in any way, but Patrick Depaillier?

Wonderful man. Great sport, kind and caring.
I didn't know he had died until I picked up my Autosport on the Thursday after and he was on the cover with a black surround.
I had met him again at Brands Hatch tests six weeks before when he drove the Alfa-Romeo, he was SO good to fans. There are not enough Patrick Depailliers in this world.
God bless him!

Exactly what I meant! Scheckter whinged no end that the short wheelbase 006 was undrivable, Patrick just jumped in and hooned it around! On or teetering on the edge at all times, bless him. I too was at the Brands test, just before he went to Hockenhiem. In fact I stood within ear shot as Roebuck interviewed him for the following Autosport. My last look at him was not in the 183, but cycling backwards in the pitlane, and endlessly smoking! I rated him as highly as Cevert, Peter Warr told me Chapman would have killed to get a sniff of signing him.

Alfa were the Clearways end of the pit lane, I was down by Lotus, I think, I heard an engine start and looked up the lane, it was the Alfa, Patrick already sitting in it.
I RAN like the clappers. arrived out of breath took some lovely slides , that I still have, gave him a thumb-up and he blasted off.
He must have sat there watching me for a good 20 seconds running, laden with gear to get the pictures.
I had also got his autograph in 78, just after he had won Monaco.
Smashing bloke, always held in high regard, and a brilliant crash helmet, too!
Do you rememember Jonesy,130 plus average,
"Alan, is 130 plus around Brands too fast"
"Yes!".

Rather than the Ferrari derived version (which despite their best efforts was no quicker than the original - frontal area not being something that was much worried about in the 1950s...)

Oh, Gordon. Disingenuous of you, but just what I expect.

Sloop, you had a better day there than I did!

About seven years ago I was in the fantastic bookshop in the paddock in Monza (I sneaked in there during the Thursday timing system test!) and found myelf standing next to Bruno Giacomelli, and fell into conversation. Do you know his eyes filled when I mentioned Patrick.

I can't deny, I've been luckier than most.
Those days are over though. It was fabulous while it lasted.

Well, he's leapt up in my estimation, following that 78 British!!
Still, you've been to MONZA!!ok
I haven't.
