Burley...

Championship Southampton

comment on the article

George Burley has the most difficult job in football according to fans favourite paper the Daily Echo. It also states that selling Kenwyne Jones will ultimately be GB's decision.

It seems a little early to be calling for GB's head however how long is a reasonable amount of time?

For Burley it's a bit of karma - now sees what could have happened if he'd stayed at Derby, who now want to sign his best player.

Surprised that someone hasn't bought out the club though. Great fan base, new stadium, great history, very good manager at the helm for the time being. Admittedly threadbear squad albeit with a couple of gems, as up front you're quite strong still. Good youth policy producing Walcott and Bale in the last three or so years. Potential for Premiership in a year to two given a little spending.

Hopefully you'll bounce back. Who knows Matt Le Tisser could follow in Niall Quinn's footsteps and be the focal point for a takeover of the club to restore your fortunes.

He spent all his cash in Southamptons night clubs and down at Burger King! biggrin

Gutted for the Saints. Burley is a good manager and should no way be replaced but they desperately need players. they've sold for some good money but they'll need some investment to move forward. If they slip another division it could be Leeds all over again.

We keep forgetting that GB is also under salary constraints. All very well saying that we could get de zeuw or any of the other defenders on a free, but if they're asking for too much basic we can't afford to take the true risk of "doing a Leeds". They ended up subsidising players on loan to rival clubs in a bid to prevent themselves going bust - and that still didn't help

gb is a brilliant manager top class. how could we have been close to administraion? in the past 5 years we have
made 30 million on players and spent 5. 3 of the past 5 seasons where in the top teir. where has all the money gone? i think maybe we should sacrifice kenwyne and use the money on the defense. we could keep a piece of the funds to sign hasselbank to pay his wages. then use the rest to bring our back line uptogether.

I didn't think Posh were anywhere near they're best last night Aaron was not as sharp as normal, although the defence were fairly tight. My question to Saints fans is>>Who would you have instead of GB? It's difficult to attract a high calibre manager without backing from the board..A selling club is normally a sinking club.

I go and watch the saints when I can including Saturdays defeat and from what I can see GB is the only stable part of the backroom staff. If he wasn't there I don't know where saints would be. Sack him? I dont think so! I'd extend his contract. We should consider sellling kenwyne to buy defenders and I do think Jason Dodd could register as a player and get himself fit as we could do with an old head at the back right now.

One of the biggest issues we've had for years is lack of stability manager-wise. It seems like we can't keep hold of a manager for more than a couple of seasons. Lowe (rightly) took a lot of stick for that.

The last thing we need now is a change of manager. GB is quality and we should be trying to keep him at all costs. My fear is that, if money doesn't come in, Burley will walk.

let's face it: Saints have been in a mess since Rupert Lowe left. He had the knowledge and expertise to run a football club; unfortunately due to the short sight of the fans, he was forced out. The new management has not been able to do a better job (not even on the same level). If we want to exit this mess, let's make a call for the current ownership to go, and let's ask Mr Lowe to come back and lead us to the premiership (that is our natural habitat)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saints went down under Lowe don't forget. Before the final season in the prem I would have agreed that Lowe had done a good job - unlike most prem clubs saints were solvent and a pretty well run business.

The truth is that it was Lowes disasterous managerial dabblings in that final year which led to the drop. I can't see that Lowe would bring anything. It would be a step backwards.

The reality is that without some outside investment Saints look destined to spend a long time fighting for scraps in the lower divisions.

As for the prem being our natural habitat lets not overlook the fate of Forest and Leeds - both huge clubs historically. If that can happen to them it can happen to us just as easily.

A good season for us this year will be avoiding the drop and trying to consolidate. A top half finish would be going some looking at things as they stand...
