Wayne Rooney injured

Manchester United
comment on the article

England's chances of progressing in competitive tournaments are becoming inextricably linked with the health of Wayne Rooney.

The England striker, who on Sunday suffered his third foot injury in four years, though the first to his left foot, will miss England's crucial Euro 2008 home qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

Depending how quickly the injury heals, Rooney may also miss the qualifiers against Estonia at Wembley and the tough trip to Russia in October.

The Manchester United striker suffered a broken metatarsal against Portugal in Euro 2004 in the first half of a quarter-final England eventually lost.

Fast forward two years to Germany and Rooney had a largely ineffective World Cup after suffering a similar injury in Premier League game against Chelsea a few weeks before the start of the tournament.

If Rooney had a muted World Cup, he certainly went out with a bang - red-carded in the quarter-final against Portugal, a game England ultimately lost on penalties.

The question is whether England's Euro 2008 fortunes will have a more positive outcome given Rooney absence over the next few weeks.

England will hardly miss Rooney's goalscoring input - he last scored for England in a competitive match against Croatia at Euro 2004.

What they will miss is Rooney's ability to do the unexpected and the extraordinary. Like all great players, Rooney's sense of space and time seems to work a fraction of a second quicker than other players.

The worry for England coach Steve McClaren is the rest of his strikers hardly look the picture of good health.

Michael Owen is coming back from injury, while Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Darren Bent are all likely to suffer from their club's rotation policies.

David Nugent, who scored on his England debut against Andorra, is another option, though the Portsmouth striker remains relatively untested in international football.

McClaren's squad is increasingly resembling a hospital ward, with John Terry, Gary Neville, Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King and Wayne Bridge all injury worries in defence.

"Give me lucky generals," Napoleon used to say. At the moment McClaren could do with a huge dose of luck on the medical front - and quickly.

i love england, but its time to be honest.

all these foreigners in the premiership..while it boosts the global appeal of the game, its killing our national team.

no wonder we're slipping down the rankings

No, we are slipping down the ranking because of a lot of things. Including our coaching.

Before you point the finger consider this, football is not the only sport in which this country is suffering.

What about Tennis, Athletics, Cricket. Or are the foreigners to blame in these sports as well?

In this country we are becoming less competitive and it's not just in sports.

My question is, why don't bigots ever think?

Spot on. Perhaps we should boycott athletics events which include the Africans in the middle distances or Americans in the sprints?
If English players are not proving themselves in the EPL, or any other major league in Europe, then they are not good enough and the national team will be stone dead for years to come. However, I would like to see more English players in action, although that has nothing to do with raising the quality of the local talent.

One other point. In order to see more English players per team, why not increase the number of substitutes per game.

In the prem at the moment we are only allowed 5. Now if they increased this number to 7 or 8 on the proviso that the extra places are filled by 'homegrown' players.

Ever since Rooney's injury all we've read about is the fact that he will miss England's Euro 2008 qualifiers. Have the majority of the media forgotten that Rooney actually plays for a club as well? He will be a huge loss to United (in case everyone forgot, they're the ones who pay his wages).

nani, giggs, anderson, ronaldo, saha, tezex, solskjaer can all play upfront if nessercay (some of them best position) so they nuthin to worry bout especially with Rooneys current form!!

Who cares about United? This is an international issue we are discussing in this thread. If you want to go and moan about United's loass, do it in their forums.

Denchanter: 'My question is, why don't bigots ever think?'

oh please, you don't speak for me. I am no bigot. And I can think, thank you very much. My point is, with all the foreigners joining the league and getting first team places, itll hinder opportunities for existing and up-and-coming English players. By the time national games come around, we don't have much to choose apart from selecting the big names over and over again - case in point, Beckham, who has hardly kicked a ball, gets recalled in the England team.
My question is, why don't stupid people ever think?
