Jamie Murray's New Partner

It has been announced that Murray and Butorac will end their successful doubles partnership at the US Open.

Together the pair have won three titles this year and currently stand at 13 in the Race. This news is surprising despite their recent blip in form which they would have overcome. Yet Murray has made public his desire to go up a level. Having won the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles, with a decent doubles ranking and at only 21 years of age, Murray may be able to attract the big-name that he is after.

Let us look ahead at some of the possibilities:

1. Mahesh Bhupathi
Murray's agent spoke about getting the "best". Well there aren't many better than former World No. 1 Mahesh Bhupathi who has won 4 Men's Doubles titles, 10 MS titles, and 25 main-tour titles. Murray is due to partner with Bhupathi in Cincy, this could be a trial for a longer-term partnership. Bhupathi is strong on serve and service return which should compliment Murray's fine net-game. The right-hand left-hand partnership will create balance.

2. Mark Knowles
Despite the French Open this year the partnership with Nestor is coming to an end as the Canadian is looking for a younger partner with a bigger serve, Zimonjic. Booray's split will coincide with that of Knowles and Nestor and Booty's comments revealed that Murray could be in line with partnering with a top-10 player. All this means there is a chance Murray could partner Knowles after the US Open. The 36-year old from the Bahamas, a former World No. 1, winner of 3 Grand Slams, 16 MS titles and 27 main-tour titles would be an awesome coup.

3. Tim Henman
With the Davis Cup in mind if Murray wants to partner up regularly with another Brit then Tim Henman will be the most likely pick. Andy is focussing on singles and the rest are too lowly ranked. Henman has a fine doubles record, winning an Olympic medal and 2 Masters Series titles. Furthermore Henman has affirmed his desire to continue playing and could see doubles as helping in this aim

In doubles you are striving for balance, Knowles strengths like Murray are at the net. It is more likely that Murray will partner someone like Bhupathi, who he will partner in Cincy and it looks like a trial for a possible long-term partnership.

Looking ahead to the Olympics next year, I think it would be a good idea for Murray to partner with a British player this early - if not a permanent partner, at least play 10 tournaments together. There is Tim, but I doubt he would enter many doubles tournaments as his focus has always been on singles. Is there anyone else?

re a Bani comment I think we have to remember this is Murray's living we are talking about. We cant expect him to team up with a Brit to match our Olympic expectations. The man has to maximise his earning potential!

From the Times, Booty‘s reaction to the split and perhaps a hint that Murray wants Mark Knowles?:

“Jamie said that he’s had two offers to play with some better players. He said he had somebody in the top ten that he wanted to play with, which I guess is a reasonable request. I don’t know who that is, but I was a little surprised that he wanted to split up.

“I would have liked to stick it out a little longer, just because I know that we can play well together. But if he’s not feeling confident with me on the court and feels he would play better with someone else, then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t try that.”

Butorac has not given up hope of a reunion. “We might realise that what we had together was better than anything else”

Christ, it sounds like a love affair.

I say ditch the tramp, Booty. you don't need that kind of heartless betrayal. He was never good enough for you. Get your glad rags on and go out there! There are plenty more fish in the seas, darling!!

Don't worry about Booty, looks like he is going to partner with Ross Hutchins, the world no. 109...

It is a great shame for Butorac, but if Murray has been offered to join up with a top-ten player or something, then he cant refuse. Ruthlessness is at times required.

Surely for the Olympics Jamie will play with Andy? It's not the biggest, in terms of physical requirement, tournament for Andy to play both events. Also Andy Murray would clearly be the best British doubles player if he played more, I know they are two different games, but his returns are first rate and his natural aptitude to the game is top drawer.

I have to say I am really surprised by this slip. It just goes to show you never know what's round the corner.
