Is Beckham more pop star than player?

comment on the article

"David Beckham is more of a pop star than a player."

So says Pele, the Brazilian who can lay claim to being the finest footballer the world has ever seen.

He also had a spell in America in the 1970s, and he has urged Beckham to forget the glitz and glamour of Hollywood and concentrate on his football.

Do you think Beckham will be able to focus on his game despite all the attractions of Los Angeles?

Born Again talks about Beckham covering nearly the whole of the pitch. Others have said he runs more during a game than any other player.

But to what effect? He never makes a serious challenge and when he does it's on the blind side and is usually a foul and often a card. His disciplinary record in his four years in Spain was dreadful.

Maybe all this ground he supposedly covers could be attributed to his constantly wandering out of position.

Beckham has his 100th cap so can we drop this thread now?

And how is he a pop star, he can't sing a note, apparently.

Although that never stopped his Mrs did it?

Wishful thinking! Beckham has already stated that he "wants to play for England for a good few years yet."

Interestingly, Capello is also believed to be very impressed with Theo Walcott and is likely to play him against the USA. With Bentley also likely to get a start this time where will that leave Beckham for this game?

It's a long return trip from LA to London to sit on the bench.

And as a team player he is willing to do that.

How many of the other current England players would do it? David Bentley, or would it be too tiring for him?

I would still like to see Bentley given a chance as he has been playing exceptionalyy well the last few weeks in the Prem. So maybe he will get a full 90 minutes in the next game or two.

cor thats generous johnny.Give bentley 90 or 180 minutes-then slam him as not good enough if he doesnt prove man of the match on each occassion, thats the Beckham fraternities dream.Unlike beckham himself of course who was given 2 YEARS of NOTHING performnmaces in an england shirt,no pressure whatsoever,no old man desperately trying to keep in the limelight ahead of him acting like a little overgrown boy because he hadnt acheieved anything of what hed wanted to from his england career. No,Bentley and walcott should be given ALL the games from now through to qualification to bed them in and cement their positions before the serious tasks begin in earnest.Beckham simply has to be told to grow up once and for all, accept his time ends rightly at 5 tournament appearances and outright failure to cement one iota of the reputation he wanted to earn for himself and let the new generation have the stage at last. One mans greed and self-obsession should not be allowed to hinder englands progress into a new time and era.

What happened to Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney?

Despite some peoples' opinions that they have shone for England in big tournaments, is there anyone here who truly believes they lived up to their potential/hype when they first emerged? Wayne Rooney is still young and may still do better, but Michael Owen's best years appear to be behind him. A shame really, as I have been an Owen fan since he would rub his hands together gleefully while celebrating goals as a Liverpool teenager.

In my opinion, many of the younger players have been thrown in too earlier as the next coming of the saviour for England on the international stage.

I would prefer to see players like Walcott and Bentley brought along gradually to maximize their potential.

It has nothing to do with whether Beckham plays or not.

rooneys peak tournaments are clearly ahead of him,he was brilliant in 2004 and has impacted 1 more event than beckham ever did however already.Owen was perhaps the sole player of the so called "golden generation" to live up to his status and prove he was strong enough to stand up to the best teams and deliver. He did all that was asked of him v brazil in 02,cooly slotting home his one chance that sinclair had threaded him.Beckham,as always against these big oppoenents, was nowhere and provided bgger all for owen and our front line all match. In 04 v portugal he made his own goal, one which should have set us on our way but we blew that too.If there is one player that hasnt been culpable in the big ones its owen,if only some of his so called "superstar" teamates could have delivered when it matterd,we may have landed something or at least have a final or a semi to show for the past 10 years of wasted underachievement.

you could say that about most players

I was responding to the hilarious post that stated if Beckham had played every qualifier for Euro 2008 we would have qualified. If he is that vital, that important to us, why didn't we win any of those quarter-finals that he played in?

Lads / Ladies, can we put this post to bed as its boring and been going on for about a year now.
_______________

This is a marathon. We're only about a third of the way through. Two more years at least. Unless some over enthusiastic BBC employee pulls the plug.

What was I saying...?..

Oh yeah, Beckham is world class and should still be playing for this country. At least, for the duration of this thread!

Hello all - I'm not being "over enthusiatic" here but I'm afraid this thread has got too long so I have to close it to comments.

Thanks for the debate. You have to agree, we have given it a good run.
