NASCAR Cheating

To try to defuse the current Ferrari vs McLaren who is the biggest cheat threads, which is getting a bit boring, I thought it might be good to share some stories about NASACR cheating instead.

I don't know much about NASCAR, but from what I've seen cheating seems to go hand in hand with winning in NASACR and some of the stories and way aroudn the rules are very interesting.

So come on people, share you NASCAR stories (Or any other good "rule bending" stories or any series)

isn't that the sport where americans drive round in circles?
Do they have sat nav?
On a more serious note, Mansell did well in the states after leaving F1, I remember Andretti winning? Have any drivers done well in F1 after Cart or nascar?

I've followed NASCAR in some way for a few years, and cheating seems to be rife in some teams, Here are a few I can remember fom this year and last.

Feb 2006 - Chad Knaus, crew chief for Jimmie Johnson is suspended for multiple races after found to be cheating in the season opening Daytona 500. Johnson goes on to win the race (I think), and the interim who filled for Knaus turned out to be so good he was given his own team in 2007. Johnson went on to win the championship.

Feb 2007 - Daytona again. Michael Waltrip's brand new Toyota team is found to have a substance in the engine, originally rumoured to be something like jet fuel, he is fined enough points to mean he only gets out of minus figures in May. Three cars belonging to the Evernham team are found to be cheating, including one with holes drilled in the inside of the wheelarch, and are fined 25 or 50 points.

Also this season, apparent NASCAR demi-gods Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson (again) and Dale Earnhardt jr. are given various penalties and all have their crew cheifs suspended for various races. There have also been many more instances of cheating this season - it makes F1 seem like a gentleman's sport.

As an aside, Graham Hill has been the ONLY driver to win all 3 major car championships: Indy, Le Mans and F1.

Montoya was the most recent addition from Indy, but F1 didn't suit him, despite some excellent performances.

The trouble with NASCAR is it is a sport with so many artificial restrictions on the cars to make them more 'raw' and to make the racing more 'real'.

The downside is that there are a ton of advantages to be had by getting round and awful lot of rules.

Michael Andretti came to Mclaren and in one year destroyed more cars than Senna and Prost ever damaged.

I think Indy cars are soft and forgiving and F1 demands excellence.
