The Open round two - Live

comment on the article

A new day and a new dawn at Carnoustie, with the second round of the Open getting under way at 0630 BST this morning with Spain's Sergio Garcia sitting pretty at the top of the leaderboard.

The Spaniard produced a startling round of 65 to secure a two-shot overnight lead and looks in fine fettle to secure a first, and arguably long overdue, major.

He gets his second round under way at 0931, but anyone thinking he will have it all his own way should reconsider.

Paul McGinley found his form in his first-round 67, while 10 players are separated by just one shot behind him.

Odds-on favourite Tiger Woods looks well placed on two under overnight, while a host of other big names like Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson are all within shooting distance.

So, can Garcia hold on and secure what would be a massively popular victory? Will Woods prove indomitable once again and secure his third successive Open? Will Ian Poulter impress or embarrass with the latest offerings from his warped wardrobe?

Let us know your thoughts...

Precisely, so tehy should show enough of Woods to satisfy his fans, and enough of the others to satisfy golfing fans. We want to watch good golf and variation in golf. At the moment, Woods provides only some of that. I love the guy, but I want to see the Open, not Woods' Open.

Whether it's golf or any other sport, the majority of sport inclined people watching the players progression each day, know the top man is Tiger Woods, and to see a youngster like Sergio Garcia making the running brings out the hope that it wont be the top dogs taking the glory again, but the likeable Sergio, making his first big triumph. I confess I'm biased and also confess I've never held a golf club in my life. But the natural sentiment, to morally support the challenger against the champ is there. Come on Sergio I shall watching you all the way. Good luck.

I couldn't agree more - Ian Poulter should concentrate on his tee shots rather than his latest hair gel purchases and what colour his breeks are. You are a good player Ian but you will never be more than someone who should have done better ( sounds like me at school)

If it wasn't for the British accents on commentary I would have thought this coverage of the Open was being shown from some U.S network seeing that Tiger Woods seem to occupy the screen almost 100 % of the time.Whereas in past broadcasts from the BBC you get to see most of the field and this is what used to seperate Auntie from the rest and not as in American coverage Tiger and no one else

I can't agree with waltercapieau's asessment of Tiger Woods. He's not my favourite (English spelling) and I don't love the man because he is a terrible embassador for the game of golf. Youngsters watch him and think you should lose your temper if you don't hit a perfect shot. Did you ever see Jack Nicholas show temper? and most other golfers keep their temper under control.

What constitutes losing one's temper - haven't noticed too many people complaining about Henrik Stenson destroying a tee marker. What is it with Brits ? I think Nick Faldo nailed it dead right - we like cosy - not someone who despite the fact he has won $70million still cares about the result more than the cash and has the passion to add more victories to his folio.
Give the man a break, he's gracious, professional and a great ambassador for the game - win or lose !

Picking on his temper is ridiculous.
Don't be this shortsighted, one example off the top of my head: Ernie Els throwing a club straight at his caddy, twice or screaming out some african foul words! That and many other temper-related actions i have never seen Tiger do during a round.

Sure, he groans and moans when his shots aren't going too good, he might even hit his club down on the ground etc. It's not the best example for the kids i know, but don't try and make a big thing out of this. There are a lot of players out there with a temper.
And yes i know because of his popularity he has to set an example. He is still a human being, with a passion to win most other players don't have.

Tiger Woods is a great ambassador for the sport and I don't see what's wrong with showing your frustration when you make bad shots. I mean, he's not throwing his golf clubs or swearing is he? Let's concentrate on his game and that fighting spirit OK?

Harrington throws it in the barry burn twice, Garcia has it to lose like Van der Velde, but on the face of it, when was the last time someone led all 4 rounds of the Open by 2-3 shots?
