First Test - England v India

Test cricket England

Andrew Strauss

Two late wickets took the gloss off a good opening day for England in the first Test against India at Lord's.

Andrew Strauss (96) put on 76 with Alastair Cook (36) and 142 with captain Michael Vaughan (79) as they punished some wayward bowling from the tourists.

But Anil Kumble, who had Strauss caught at slip earlier, got Paul Collingwood lbw and Vaughan edged RP Singh behind.

Kevin Pietersen rode his luck to make 34 as England closed on 268-4 after the third and final stoppage for bad light.

can Jaffer stick around? How much do you think he will make in the first innings?

Jaffer tends to shaky at the start, but has shown a tendency to post big scores once he is past twenties. With Tendulkar settled now, I suspect India will not have difficulty getting past England's first innings total.

Morning All,

despite England's batting implosion yesterday, they ended up with the honors for the day two through some intelligent bowling.

The inexperienced English bowling attack homed in quickly and purposefully on the keystones of Indian batting. Day two continued to be Advantage England.

Now there are some who talk of a "karmic connection" between Lord's and Saurav. I can assure you, that's not mine, but I've read any number of articles in newspapers and on the web espousing it.

India must be fervently praying that that be true today. There must be many converts to superstition among my fellow Indian fans in this regard. In case he does pull it off, I'm curious to know how the media, print and electronic, responds/reacts today, tomorrow and the day after.

Then there's Laxman still there - will he perform another salvage operation successfully?

Then there's Monty...

What's the weather forecast for the next two days? When it rained at the World Cup in the Caribbean, English fans kept complaing that those venues should not have been chosen because it rained there. If so, no major sporting event should ever be played in Great Britain.....cricket, Wimbledon, British Open golf,... rain, rain, rain.... But, it is the English that complaint he most.

Weather forecast is NOT GOOD.

As someone on TMS stated (Aggers maybe? Or Selvers?)
it may be that the best thing for England is to get bowled out tomorrow for about 200. I doubt India can chase 300 on this wicket.

But, with such a good indian lineup (on paper) I can't see Vaughan declaring without a lead of 400, and some rain is forecast for today and tomorrow.

Indian 1st innings was 77 overs. We are unlikely to get 77 overs on Monday.

I hope we do. I'll be at Lords!
So the draw is still possible.

Indian batting is strong on paper, but fails too often when on the road. Advantage England now, unless rain comes to the rescue of the tourists.

Good performance by Anderson in this match, he proved me wrong alright. Although he does need to be more consistent and able to bowl on pitches that won't offer any assistance.

But a 4.40 restart? Once again the paying public are pushed to the back of the queue. Why so long? Will probably rain or the light will get worse within that time. Is the game about entertainment or what? sadface
