The Open - Live

comment on the article

The 136th Open Championship got under way at 0630 BST this morning, amid worsening conditions at Carnoustie in Scotland.

Tiger Woods is bidding for a third successive Claret jug and 13th major title, and starts as 3-1 favourite to seal the victory that would leave him just five short of equalling Jack Nicklaus's major record.

He plays his first two rounds with England's Justin Rose and Scotland's Paul Lawrie, champion the last time the Open was hosted by Carnoustie in 1999 - and the last time a European snared a major.

The British challenge, according to world rankings at least, will be led by world number nine Luke Donald, though the US-based Englishman has a lacklustre Open record.

And the likes of Rose, Colin Montgomerie, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Paul Casey and Sergio Garcia will also be looking to give the European fans some joy over four days.

We will be here for the next four days bringing you regular updates as the action unfolds, and we would love you to get involved.

Who will be the movers and shakers this weekend? Can anyone stop the Tiger? Let us know folks...

How old is the little squit? He looks like he should be making the difficult transition to puberty, and noticing the differences between boys and girls, not playing with the world's best golfers, and Nick Faldo.

watched enough golf to know that first round performers can still end up not playing on the weekend. Too early to even comment on the eventual winner except for the fact that when tiger is hitting his drivers cleanly like today, the rest of the field is in trouble as the putting will take care of itself come pressure time. The likes of Tiger and mickelson only need to find the fairway and dominate from there.

The BBC has the best Golf commentaters in the world. Why is Gary Lineker allowed on the golf programs? apart from reading the leader booard and stating the obvious, he has nothing to say. Confine him to football only please.

daveout - I agree about your comments on Lineker. The first time I saw him fronting the Masters broadcast it made me sick.

I am sure there must be some ex tour professionals with enough personality/charisma and more importantly knowledge to front the coverage.

In Lineker's defence did anyone see him interview Cabrera in Spanish and translate it all while continuing the interview?

Very impressiveok

Couldnt agree more about Lineker, nice guy, good translation of Cabrera, but heck guys, put a golfer in his place. I recall him asking Nicklaus last year something like "Are you happy with your own career?" Jack just looked at him! The text reporting is hilarious too. Some muppet non golfer sitting typing rubbish... smiley

Gary Linekar is simply awful - he reads from the sutocue and its obvious. Why not give it to Hazel Irvin - she is nice and cheerful, good looking, a seemless presenter.
Remember how professional Steve Rider was when filling in Gaps in the show?
Gary L gets 1.5 million per year from the BBC - stick to football Gary - leave it to the professionals - Alliss, Brown, James, Cotter, Hazel Irvin, Doogie D, .
Peter Alliss Hazel Irvin put you at ease - relax you - gary Linekar would be lost without the autocue.
