Davenport makes surprise comeback

comment on the article

Lindsay Davenport has revealed she will make a comeback to tennis by partnering Lisa Raymond in the doubles in next month's Pilot Pen Classic.

Davenport became a mother for the first time last month when she gave birth to a baby boy.

How do you think Davenport will fare after her break from the sport?

All, lets be clear, in all modern sports, age is an influencing factor on performance and that is an undisputable fact. 31, no tennis for a year, back problems, knee problems previously. You cannot just ignore all that. I really liked Davenport as a player but think she will struggle to break top 10 again.

I am really pleased to see her returning to the sport. I think we will see a slightly different Lindsay on court and yes I agree with some that she won't poss make it in the top 5 but she will be there or there abouts and I do hope she plays in next years Australian Open, single or doubles I will be glad to see her there

lindsay's a working mother who just happens to be a tennis pro. she's also a pioneer in that regard able to push boundaries. the young guns better watch out, she's on a mission, serious about her job, obviously, to make such a commitment.

the break has also given her time to think about what she wants from life as a mother and player. AND what she wants to achieve and importantly what she wants to be contribute, to be remembered for.

she's made an important decision not just for her but for many who need to be a little braver, Lindsay can give them that by example.

Martina Navratilova, a pioneer: she always said the ball will never know your age, how true was that?

Welcome back Lindsay, I have always admired her play, but I do not believe that she can win a slam in the near furure. Hingis tried it, but was unsuccessful.

The difference between Lindsay and Martina is the power.

Lindsay still had/has one of the best serves in the game, and plenty of power off the ground too.

She can will still have enough weapons to over power a lot of opponents.
OK she might not be as fast - But speed has never been a good part of her game, so it will be easier for her to adapt.

Take a look at the top ten... Hantuchova? Petrova? Mauresmo.. Jankovic... Lindsay has crushing records against those players (4 out of the top ten!)

She has only been out the game one year, and I really don't think anyone can claim the game has seriously moved up a level in that year - If anything players like Sharapova, Henin & Mauresmo are not playing as well as they did last year!

Serena, despite the GS win, is still struggling to regain her fitness / movement... well especially her movement really, (the only real advantage she had over a lot of players 2-3 years ago).

You have Dementieva, Schnyder, Bartoli, and Safina all in the top 20 - Can anyone really say that Davenport (fitness permitting), is not likely to give some of those girls a serious run for their money!

I agree, Davenport will do fine shes a great player. I also agree that Serena's movement has been rough. Her movement on grass is usually great but this year she was lazy. Hence why she lost to Justine. It will take Davenport a few months to get match fit to compete with the likes of Justine, Venus and Serena though. Or even anyone in top 10.

What a great champion Lindsay has been? I wish she can cap her career with at least one more slam!
She surely does deserve one more. Coming back after child deliver and at 31 is great news for the game of tennis.

I think Lindsay will be a little slow to start off with, but with match practice will be better than ever....she wouldn't commit to the tour again if she felt she couldn't achieve a decent result....
