Steven Gerrard!!!

Premiership Liverpool
comment on the article

Please Read the whole article before you comment!!!

I personally think Steven Gerrard is one of the best midfielders in the world however..
This season Gerrard was named in the PFA team of the year, nominated for player of the year and widely praised throughout england by many pundits & reporters. He was strongly reported to have an excelent season & made Lampard look bad. However..
Lampard: 22 goals, 17 assits
Gerrard: 14 goals, 11 assists

I aggree he was good for england this season. However thats international not club.

He scored about 3 or 4 goals that Liverpool wouldn't have won without, whereas most of Lampard's goals were crucial and resulted in winning or saving draws. Gerrard had his team knocked out of FA Cup and Carling cup very early and didnt do well in the prem either (despite having an excelent run in CL). Lampard became captain after a series of injury to Terry and although without captain experience he gave great performances and kept chelsea fighting on all 4 fronts. Lampard also ranked 12 places above Gerrard in actim stats which depitcts a players prem preformance through all around contribution. So what i'd like to know is why Gerrard was in PFA team of the year and why he was regarded as having a good season, because for his standards i didn't think he had a very good one. I personnaly think there is too much attention on Internation football and that infiltrated into club footballers and influetual punters like Alan Hanson & Andry Gray over praise him witch gives people false opinios. I'd also like to say although many of you wouldn't admit it, Gerrard does dive, which is something Lampard just doesn't do.

I'm not doing this to start a debate other whos better out of Lampard and Gerrard or any other midfielder.I would just really like to know what Gerrard did this season that was so special becuase i don't follow him much and i didn't think he was up to standards and im sure true Gerrard/Liverpool fans would know!

Thank you!

"Lampard: 22 goals, 17 assits
Gerrard: 14 goals, 11 assists"

I think I'd expect this as Chelsea are clearly a better side, Gerrard would have likely scored more if he played in the Chelsea side, I expect.

Also Lampard's passes are more likely to become assists, as better strikers, like Drogba, are more likely to score from Lampards passes than Kuyt or Crouch are to scrore from Gerrards passes.

"Gerrard had his team knocked out of FA Cup and Carling cup very early and didnt do well in the prem either (despite having an excelent run in CL)"

I don't think he HAD his team knocked out, he was part of the team that was knocked out and yes it was an early exit in both, but against decent opposition. Also, I think 3rd in the League behind such good oppostition was a good achievement, a smaller gap would've been nice though.

I don't really know if Gerrard dives, but still, Ronaldo is recognised as a great player, does he dive?

"So what i'd like to know is why Gerrard was in PFA team of the year"

At the end of every English football season the members of the PFA, the players union, vote on which of its members has played the best football in the previous year. As the award is voted on by the players it is often viewed as the premier individual honour given in domestic English football, especially by the players themselves.

I guess that sums up how players can appear better on paper or have better Actim stats, but still not get in the team. As with all polls/vote/elections etc. it's not always a true reflection of facts or widespread opinions. Maybe Gerrard has more friends in the PFA than Lampard? Also I'm not sure if they don't take international performances in to account? It must surely have some influence on the players when voting.

I can't believe someone is actually saying Lampard had a better season. He scored more goals because he takes 10 times more shots and takes penalties for his team. If you could honestly say you would rather have Fat Frank in your team than Stevie Gerrard when you needed something to happen(except expertly hitting someone 50 rows back), then i will leave this debate alone. But honestly, I think even a Chelski fan if they were honest with themselves, would take Stevie G over Fat Frank in a heartbeat. Personally the only time I would not want to be sitting at the Kop end would be when Lamps is lining up a Fat Frank special, would have to duck for cover.

there is no point at all trying to have a discussion about Steven Gerrard with a scouser, cos Gerrard in their eyes is immune to all criticsm. You will have better luck trying to convince Cristiano Ronaldo to join Derby

The Real Teddy's Sinister Moustache

"because Gerrard is the only player of notable quality at Liverpool"

Why bother writing such rubbish? Could a team with only one quality player finish 3rd in the league and get to the champions league final?

Not at all true. I've criticised him many times, sang his praises a lot more often though! But surely were bound to think he's great, just like any supporters think their teams top players are great. We wouldn't be very good supporters if we didn't support, would we?

Oh my god! Thank god for RichTeaUK, hes the only person here not retarded enough to read the article! I never said Lampards better i'm just saying statistically he had a better season, please read what i'm saying and don't just jump to conclusions just as you see the name Gerrard and a tiny bit of criticism. All i want to know is why Gerrard was highly rated last season becuase for his standards, i didn't think he was very good. I only used Lampard as an example because people spend their lives comparing these two!! Please just read the article before you post!

I am sure if you gave Gerrard an advanced free role at Chelsea and had no duty to track back, his stats would more than compair to Lampard's.

It's really hard to stick up for your teams players without either offending other fans/players or getting loads of silly comments made back to you.

On a slighlty unrelated but similar piont... I see where people are coming from when they say Gerrard looks better than he actually is when surrounded by weaker players than you might find at Man Utd or Chelsea and that in fact Lampard is a better player, although I don't agree. But you'll see from Juan Pablo Angel leaving Villa for the US and scoring 9 goals in 8 games, that this can sometimes be the case.

Do you agree with this? Do you think Gerrard will still have the same effect on the team now, with the recent high profile, quality signings? (Torres, Mascherano etc.) Or do you think he'll become just another Liverpool player, along with Alonso, Sissoko etc.?

So what i'd like to know is why Gerrard was in
PFA team of the year?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Simple.
Because the PFA is The Professional Footballers Association. Which means that he was chosen by his peers, and not by fans or sports writers or The FA.
In other words by the players who are members of an assication for footballing professionals.
