Flintoff hopes to be fit for the O.D.I'S

One-day internationals England
comment on the article

I have just read that Freddie Flintoff hopes to be fit for the oneday internationals against India. The question I ask to the English fans is that ain't it too early for him to return for the onedayers? When you think that he has already had three operations on his ankle won't it be better if he returns for the winter series England have?I can remember here McGrath who wanted to comeback into the side within three or four months after he had a ankle surgery but he was rested for a year before he cameback against Srilanka and the ankle didn't trouble him after as he went on to play for three more years but I thought Freddie was rushed into action a bit too early last year after he had ankle surgery.

I hope Freddie Flintoff gets adequate rest and comes back as England and world cricket itself needs a fit and firing Flintoff!

I absolutely agree with you juniorwaughisgod. The example of McGrath and how fit and firing he was after he came back should be uppermost in the selectors mind. See my comment from a similar post:

Frankly I don't think we need Flintoff back in a hurry in ODI.

Where we are weak is with our opening batsmen, not our bowling. Presumably he would displace Dimi if he came back, and it's not obvious that we would end up better off.

A fully fit Flintoff who has recovered his batting form would obviously be an asset. However a semi-fit guy who can't hit an elephant's backside with a banjo is nothing to get excited about.

It is just stupid for him to be rushed back. He has been bowling at around 80% for ages and he stinks up the place with the bat just now. He needs complete rehab for his ankle.

Flintoff has been rushed back too soon in the past. The selectors should avoid repeating this mistake. I say let him rest for the remainder of the season. With his tendency to succumb to this type of injury, it is best to err on the side of caution.

wykhamist, that’s an interesting variation on the “cow’s ar5e with a banjo” metaphor, but I only went to a grammar school!

i think saying we don't have a problem with our bolwing is a little optimistic. if a side that concedes over 100 off the last 10 overs against the WI two games in a row doesnt have a problem then i don't know who does.

flintoff is one of the few bowlers we have with any control, especially at the death.

i do, however, agree that rushing him back would be a mistake.

I agree with the sentiment on this thread, a fully fit Andrew Flintoff is what England need right now and it's not worth jeopordising a player of his quality for a one day series against India. Give him time to rest.

Fred needs rest. Look what happens when you rush him back he preforms poorly then gets injured again. Michael Vaughan seems to be doing much better after his prolonged rest.

The next time freddy should contribute to england should be in Colombo. The Twenty20 World Cup is not something he has to be back for, but the test series is. If he misses the Twenty20 and gets a couple of county games for Lancashire under his belt in that time he will be better prepared to cope with the stresses of touring Sri Lanka
