Pele tells Beckham to expect test

David Beckham
comment on the article

David Beckham not to expect an easy ride when he starts playing in the United States.
Beckham, 32, will be unveiled as a Los Angeles Galaxy player on Friday.

Pele, who played for New York Cosmos in the 1970s, said: "I advise him it will be very difficult to play because the teams are very good and mark very well.

"He must be prepared, be in good condition because it is not easy to play in the United States. The football is now at a high level."

You can read more here and we'd like your thoughts.

Do you agree with Pele? How do you think Beckham will fare in the States? Give us your views.

Milky Joe gets it.

Whatever anyone thinks, one has to acknowledge that Becks will have singlehandedly increased the profile of the beufiful game, especially at the professional level, here in the USA.

I sense jealousy and/or fear on the part of many naysayers here. I could be wrong, of course.

As for him being back in the UK in a year - HA!

When I lived in South Africa in the 1980s, we had many Brits come work on a two year program for my accounting firm. They used to ask "What is the difference between ET and a Pom?" ET went home. They had such a great time that they just never left!

I suspect we may be asking the same question about the Beckhams in a few years.

You really need to start reading discussions before you wade in with your ignorant comments. You make yourself look like a complete fool every time. Of course the point was about money – seeing as it was in response to comments about the money he would be earning!! And you talk about value for money? How is Beckham not value for money when most of the money he is going to be earning is a percentage of the amount of money he is going to be making for the club? He will only be earning what he generates!! It’s really not hard to work out!! Why would Zidane be earning what Beckham is when Beckham is generating masses more money than Zidane, is globally more marketable than Zidane, transcends the sport more than Zidane, is more media friendly than the notoriously shy Zidane and isn’t actually retired like Zidane!?! Please explain to me how if Beckham generates £50m, for example, in profit for a company/club as a result of the marketing of his ‘Image’ and he gets a 10% share of that profit he isn’t justified in those earnings?

------------------------

first of all, lets clear this up.....zidane has a LOT more potential than beckham as a movie start to begin with, he's better at EVERYTHING compared to beckham, if zidane wanted, he could earn double what beckham ever has, and creat a big phenomenom accross the globe, not that he hasn't already. so thats put to bed now.

the point, which you so moronically avoided AGAIN is whether beckham deserves all this attention because of how he looks, or his footballing ability, which OBVIOUSLY is not even in the same galaxy as the likes of zidane and henry.

next time try and think things over before u talk.

laugh

It took you 2 weeks to come up with that??!!

Basically ignore all rational comments and make a load of wild and unsubstantiated comments based purely on nothing more than personal feeling.

That's poor even by your standards.

nah, i havent actually looked at this article in two weeks because some of us have a life lol believe me, if i had the option to reply a lot sooner, when the debate was fresher, i would have taken it.

my comment has nothing to do with feeling. beckham is over-rated, FACT, over-paid FACT, if zidane wanted, he could earn what beckham does in a month FACT and anyway, whats earning power and commerical power got to do with ON THE PITCH abilities??

you really are ridiculous!! no love of the game at all. beckham is never world class, his popstar appearance might be, but HE isn't, there are many better players than him who ARE world class, beckham has done VERY LITTLE on the pitch to prove he is world class, the occasional greece game, the odd penalty, the string of good performances for real madrid in the last few months of a 4 YEAR STAY AT THE CLUB, doesn't mean he is world class.

go and tear ur poster down, really, beckhams old news, nobody cares apart from you.

Writing FACT in capitals doesn't make somthing true.

It is clearly you that has no love of the game or any knowledge of it. The fact you keep going on about Beckham as a person and talking about 'celeb' life would suggest you are probably just a 'Heat' magazine reader who doesn't actually watch, play or follow football but just listens to celeb soundbites. The fact I played football to a decent standard in my younger days aswell as spent some time as a sports journalist in more recent years means I personally feel I have a reassonable basis to form an opinion on football matters. Even if that means nothing to you, which I'm sure it won't, the fact (or should I put FACT?)that players, managers and pundits alike are in agreement that although his celeb persona has gone sky high Beckham has generally been a very good footballer throughout his career and for a period was amongst the best in the world. A few months ago Zidane said Beckham was one of the best players he has ever played against/with. Does that mean that Zidane does not have any love for football then?
This is the last time I even bother trying to reason with you as frankly it is a waste of time as you obviously know nothing about football and can't even be bothered, or lack the intelligence, to try and be objective or sensible about things. FACT.

Have a great weekend ok

come on sir,you dont even have to be a cynic to think this has any real meaning or merit.Youll never truly know what zidane thinks of beckham or any other player for that matter because they all say the same things about each other, understandably. When asked about Mcmanaman during his time at madrid,he said the same.Infact has there ever been a case in modern history of a current player at any big club when asked about another current player at said club or even elsewhere where they havent described them as "fanatsitc" or "great" or "just amazin" if its beckham himself speaking?

Far more worthwhile gearnering the opinions of those outside his immediate circle and those who can look on from afar more objectively such as George Best or a long-serving quality newspaper journalist such as James Lawton,Hugh Mcilvanney or even the Beebs own alan green.Ask these men with football in their blodd having seen it played for many decades before it became "trendy" in recent years whether they think Beckham has ever been worthy of the hype hes received and the answer will be short and not very sweet,i can guarantee you.

well if you listen very carefully, youll be able to detect the distinctive sound of grave-turning that occurs each time some vapid brainless clueless "soccer watchin" plastic calls "Becks" a "great player".

quite the contrary, it means YOU listen to such things, think about it.

the media darling, portrayed as a movie star, making his red carpet move to LA alongside tom cruise....none of this has to do with football, but clearly people like yourself are so taken away by the magical fairies that you have no time to sink back down to earth and think realistically.

good day to u sir.
