Americas cup stays in Europe?

The final of the 32 America's Cup has been won by Alinghi. A close race was decided by a penalty given in favour of the Swiss syndicate at the final weather mark. On what should have been a simple run, an apparent wind shift seemed to be the trigger for an untypical equipment failure on Alinghi that allowed the Kiwi's space to pass and almost execute their penalty before the Swiss were able to cross just 1 second ahead to claim the Auld Mug for a second time.

The question is now what happens next. Rumours around the port suggest that the Spanish will be the challenger of record. This would suggest that Valencia would keep their trophy event. Anyone who has spent time at the Port Americas Cup will know what a great venue it is but also how it also still has potential for improvement. Likewise the scheduling of the Louis Vuitton Regatta will hopefully be planned for a more windy time of the year.

In terms of challengers the great news from the UK is that we will be there. We have a team, an associated sailing club, with a distinguished history in the Americas Cup and a fantastic training boat. The personalities in charge of the team doubtless have the potential to attract the right people to sail, and hopefully finance the venture. As far as their chances go, is it realistic to see a new team better what the home side managed this time?

The Spanish team have certainly been one of the big surprises of AC32, and they have managed fantastic results, but don't forget, they were the home side. If anyone wants to see what wins the Americas Cup you should watch the races that took place in all of the Louis Vuitton Acts. Look at the progress that each team has managed, and remember that the sailors of Team Origin have yet to sail as a team.

So will we see the Auld Mug brought to the Solent in just before the Olympics? My prediction, for what it's worth, is that we could make the LV finals in 2009 then bring the cup back from New Zealand in 2011.

Having just come back from valencia i must say i was suprised how great this event was. Pity the swiss won though. they should change themselves to a spanish team there was that much support for them.

It would be good to see a british team compete though, and would be excellent to host the event as it has done wonders for the Valencia port region

Valencia should keep the trophy event since it has been a fantastic americas cup this year. Bertarelli should take advantage too of the 2009 F1 race in Valencia.

Congratulations to Alinghi.

I personally think they should retain the current venue for the cup as everyone in the area became an ardent supporter of a rather obscure sailing event and made it so much fun - so hats off to Valencia.

This edition was very good. As Italian, I am still a little bit sad about Luna Rossa defeat though.
Valencia was a good choice, but I think that Alinghi should change location for the next America Cup.
La Maddalena in Sardinia would be a perfect place, very windy!

This was one of the most exciting America's Cups with close racing, equal boats but the crew's skill and luck in equal parts deciding the winner in the end.
The lack of a reliable wind on many days detracted from the event, a bit like this year's Wimbledon with the rain delays.
Another venue next time might insure better wind.
Personally I find the America's Cup an amazingly expensive event. That it recycles some billionaires' wealth into the leisure economy is the most positive thing that I can say.
Some plutocrats such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are investing their money in more chartiable/useful ways.
But telling a billionaire how to spend his money is like telling Paris Hilton not to buy
another designer handbag.
Vive la Cup!

Just one message to the Brits: get your act together and launch a good challenge for the next one! After more than 100 years of losing it it's now time to bring the Auld Mug in Britain!
Ok I'm Italian and I should support Italian syndacates, but if a British Yacht Club puts together a really credible challenge I promise to support them.

So the "Swiwis" beat the real Kiwis then!! As a Kiwi myself I am gutted that ETNZ couldn't quite pull it off despite the most exciting cup series ever. Well done to Valencia and I feel gutted for Dalts & the guys. Shame the cup isn't going down under but here's to the next one when I hope the UK can enter a team as well (I'm 50/50 Kiwi/English).

Valencia was a great venue and this round of the cup was very close. If the cup does stay in the same place I hope that some of the teams connect better with supporters.

While the sponsors all have dedicated areas in the bases there were only shops rather than bars for the supporters. With all of the bars and restaurants around the Parc, it would be nice to see them linked to specific teams, with comentaries from the team or their national TV rights holders?

Another thing that I hope to see again is the fleet racing - I know most of the teams hate this but it is a fantastic sight to see all of the boats racing together.
