Stepney, Ferrari and McLaren?

Formula One

I just heard a piece on Radio 4's PM programme, a news piece at 17.15 mention McLaren firing, or suspending someone.

It seems someone at McLaren received something from Ferrari. We can assume it wasn't wine, ham or cheese.

UPDATE - 17.30 news item. 'A senior technical employee at McLaren has been suspended but not named'

Jenson Button must have an excellent PR. He has done nothing in F1 but is always making the news headlines. Does he pay for that or is Honda doing it for him? Honda should sack both average drivers and get some top ones.

Did Ferrari cheated in Seepang 1999? Yes, they did and got their desqualification overturned and subsequently won the Constructor championship losing the Drivers to Mika. Now, they are trying to put a spanner into McLaren's work. It's all SPIN to distract Hamilton and Alonso. Sack the spies and get on with it.

It appears that Ferrari have now for the second time had confidential information stolen by another team.
Are they supposed to say, "its ok we will invest millions more on new ideas" or go to the police and take action?
Why would Stepney give for free parts and technical packages to Mike Coughlan, and why would Mike Coughlan pay for this information out of his own pocket. Is he that rich? or was he helped?

I tend to agree with all those saying let's wait and see what comes out in the wash. It's too lazy intelectually, to go all nationalistic and suspect Ferrari of "dirty" tricks, and see McLaren as being the "victim" of said tricks.

Two very senior men for God's sake, in both teams, are implicated. If Ferrari are playing nasty, this is so high-risk, it borders on stupidity, because it could hurt them. badly. Say what you like about Ferrari, but stupid they ain't.

This sounds like a case of sever disaffection, and possibly a rush of blood to the head ending in a thoughtless attempt to hurt the people responsible for an apparent snub. Ot it could be simply an "in it for the money" situation. But still crazy.

We all know that sometimes, people can be so enraged over a perceived slight, will do anything, and hang the consequences.

None of us as yet knows the real story. We can but wait to see where the pieces fall. Eventually.

'Say what you like about Ferrari, but stupid they ain't.'

But wasn't team politics one of the things that kept them in the barren wilderness years?

They have lost a few personnel this year.

You can imagine people within any teams having their own agendas, it's been mentioned with reference to the Stepney affair. It happens in other industries.

Agreed. That's a very valid point.

This type of things been going on for years. When I started F2 Australia the import duty was over 50% on cars and locals made clones of Lotus type 20 just before add's were on cars so costs were high. All small things pass from one team to the other just as people move between teams. If it is that good put a patent on it the time it takes all will know. I't what you know gets you the job. LateBraker. Down under. (like the cricket coach you let go was he to forget how to bowl a ball because he came back to Oz).

Hi LateBraker,

this issue of improvising appeared in an article on the late Bruce McLaren in last month's CAR Magazine. It mentioned fitting Japanese (I can't remember if it was Nissan or Toyota) pistons into the engines of the old British cars in NZ.

As he was in the middle of nowhere, and getting the parts let alone pay for them was not easy he ended up making them himself.

(I deleted the previous comment as I omitted the 'late' between 'the' and 'Bruce McLaren')

If Jenson and Rubens are both 'average' drivers, then name me a 'top' driver who'd want to waste a year in the useless lemon that is the '07 Honda?
