England V Westindies

One-day internationals England

In my view it is going to be a interesting match between England, and Westindies as both teams look to put the disappointing Worldcup behind, and start fresh.I think this match can go either way.As far as the teams are concerned Bell has got a recall, as he came through a fitness test, but he hasn't looked comfortable in the oneday format, so there are question marks over him in the onedayers, also Monty as well as Plunkett have come in with Yardy, and Sidebottom missing out respectively, and it is said Sidebottom has been ruled out with a virus, which is unfortunate, as he has been bowling well. For the Westindies Chanderpaul, and Devon Smith too are struggling with injures, but they have been declared fit, and are playing, which is good news from the Westindies point of view, especially Chanderpaul who is a key member in the side.

Finally for England to do well in the onedayers it is time someone other than Kp, and Colly score runs consistently.I hope Shah, Cook, Prior etc can do that job, add to that the bowling has to improve as it has been inconsistent. For the Westindies the unpredictable Gayle has to fire, Powell has to bowl like he did in the second 20/20 game, where he was impressive, and they will be hoping for Chanderpaul to score runs. Bravo, Sammy, Ramdin also will be looking to impress.I hope it will be a exciting game.

Among the bowlers I HAVE SEEN Tufnell was talented but didn't do well otherwise in tests Monty is the best as he is accurate and gets bounce but I know there have been many greater bowlers before!

Uncovered wickets didn't always help the bowlers. Anyway they had to know how to bowl on them - like one does a dry covered dustbowl.
Uncovered wickets are a red herring - and I am not of the brigade that it was 'better in my day' - it was different.

considering someone earlier seemed to think giles was the greatest spinner ever. my vote will go to the mighty Gareth Batty or perhaps Dawson.

Even when you take away 19 wickets in one match, Laker was an outstanding bowler.

Underwood was particularly devastating on damp wickets. John Arlott once said, "England must carry Underwood like an umbrella ..." He would have been still a very effective bowler today, but the uncovered wickets helped his style of bowling very much. The ball would skid and keep low.

The two best opponents for England in those years were AUS and WI.

vs. WI
Laker: 51 w @ 30.4 runs
Underwood: 38 w @ 43.6 runs

vs. AUS
Laker: 79 W @ 18.3 runs
Underwood: 105 w @ 26.4 runs

Others in contention would be Lock and Titmus.

If I were find places for two spinners in an all-time England XI, I would pick both Laker and Underwood, very different styles.

Laker was less effective when touring. Underwood's performance was about the same at home or when touring.

Home:
Laker - 135 w @ 18.1
Underwood - 145 w @ 24.2

Away:
Laker - 58 w @ 28.6
Underwood - 152 w @ 27.4

If we are talking the worlds greatest spinners ever then its Murali at number one, Giles at number two and Warne at number three.
Best English spinner I have seen apart from Giles is Tuffers and now Monty.
