Charlton shut down women's team

Women Charlton Athletic
comment on the article

After all the good publicity they have generated in recent years, Charlton have managed to undo most of it with one rank bad decision - to end their involvement with women's football. For several years they have been the only serious challengers to Arsenal and apart from seriously inconveniencing their star players with this decision, they have shattered the dreams of many young girls.

It would be interesting to see what the cost of running the women's team was. They were at least successful, yet I suspect the cost of operation was a fraction of the amount they pay to just one of the pampered men, who failed so miserably last season.

It was inevitable that Charlton would need to trim costs following their relegation to the Championship, but this decision shows all that is bad about the national game. It stinks.

Have just had a look at the Charlton website and there's a big section devoted to the women's team. I bet that disappears pretty quickly next week! steam

Apart from the odd silly comment on the various threads about this, I'm pleased to see that most people who have commented, seem to agree that this is a bad day for Charlton. Perhaps the Board have finally lost the plot. Last season they made a succession of disastrous decisions, but this one is arguably the worst.

CAFC-Beth - I sincerely hope that you and all of your team mates get the break you deserve elsewhere.

As a Charlton supporter and Chairman of a women and girls football club I am mortified by this outrageous decision to axe the womens section.

Given the growth of womens football I have no doubt the Charlton women and girls will have no problem finding alternative clubs to play for. I just hope it's not a club that we play!

alot of the girls and women unfortunatly wont find clubs that easy. so many clubs hav already trialed to find new girls in may and there spaces have been filled. alot of the england players will find it alot easier to get a place in a team.but not all of us have that chance.

still doesnt change the fact the ambition to do well with the club u love has been taken away from so many of us. charlton need to relize that so many girls dream from the ages of 10 have been shattered for a male plaers weekly wage packet. its discusting.

Must be a kick in the teeth Beth, when the club shuts your team down then a few days later will receive £17-18m for Darren Bent.

This is disgusting. Another unwelcome reminder of the sexism that women and girls face - just to play a game of football.

When you look at the cost breakdowns of how much actual money it will end up saving the club, it's pretty appalling that this was even considered a beneficial exercise in terms of cost-cutting.

I believe this decision will come back to haunt Charlton. I hope the girls and women that have been affected dont lose heart for the game, please find another club to play for, dont give up.
