US Open day two

comment on the article
Dougherty dominates the first round

The players are all set to take on the tight fairways and fast, sloping greens of Oakmont for a second time as play resumes at the US Open on Friday.

But what's this at the top of the leaderboard?

It's the rare sight of a European - England's Nick Dougherty - and there hasn't been a European winner at the US Open since Scunthorpe's Tony Jacklin won in 1970.

Dougherty fired a two-under-par 68 for a one-shot lead but what do you think his chances are of staying at the summit?

Argentine Angel Cabrera, is the only other player under par, while Bubba Watson and Spanish veteran Jose Maria Olazabal are level.

Looming ominously behind the leading quartet are a bunch of 16 players three shots adrift 71.

Amongst them is two-time US Open champion Tiger Woods, defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh and England's Justin Rose.

Can we expect them to make a move?

Your fine thoughts please on how the story is likely to unfold at Oakmont.

These professional golfers can't possibly be enjoying this course, surely the spectators want to see great approach shots to the green not a ball coming on the green only to roll on and on and finish 20 yards off the green in thick rough! Its becoming who mentally can hold it together the longest...........................rules Monty out then!!!!!!!

Sam Walker saves himself from a 90 finish with a par on the 18th, only his 4th of the round. What sort of a course is that!10 players are more than 20 over after 2 rounds...

Dont know what the % of Americans were in the starting line up but here's a statistic. Not ONE American shot under par in days 1&2. Wonder is that's a record? Does anybody know?

At what point does the US Open no longer fall under the heading of 'entertainment'?
Last night watching it was pure agony - who knows what it's like to play?
I'd like to see a few more birdies but the USGA prefer the worlds best to look silly.

Husky
I live here in the States. It's just the mentality which is why the US Open is what it is. They like to be known for the biggest, the best, the loudest, the hardest, etc. etc. You get the picture.
