US Open day one

comment on the article
Church pew bunkering at Oakmont

The world's finest golfers have gathered at the challenging Oakmont Country Club course in Pennslyvania for the second major of 2007, the US Open.

As usual these days, Tiger Woods will tee off as the hot favourite to add a third US Open title to his 12 majors.

Challenging him will be the likes of Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els (the champion here in 1994) and a host of Europeans.

But no golfer from this side of the (North!) Atlantic has won a US Open since 1970, or any major championship since 1999.

So what do you reckon is going to happen at Oakmont this weekend?

Come on, get involved.

I remember two incidents, on the same tee spaced by about four years. Both happened on the 10th tee at RAF Gatow (Berlin) in the mid '80s. The 10th is a par three, which is arrow straight, with the club house and large patio on the right, followed by waht was then the Rugby Club. Then there are trees after that, whilst on the left is the 9th green, followed by more trees. Got the picture?

1. Tom tees up and unleashes a might 5-wood off the back tees. The ball hits the ladies tee marker (a large plastic golf ball) and disappears. We search around for the given time and have all but given up when one of our 4-ball starts laughing uncontrollably. The ball had not, as you would expect bounced off in some undetermined direction; rather it had disappeared into the tee marker itself. Play it as it lies?

2. Same tee 4 years on. John lets rip with a 4-iron and it comes right off the toe, heading for the aforementioned Rugby Club. The time is critical here; 1700 on a Saturday evening following a rugby match. It was a warm evening anf the windows to the Club were open. A few of the patrons were stood, sipping their beers, loking out of said window watching the golf.
The ball flew straight for the window (nobody was quick enough to yell fore!) and ricocheted all around the frame, before continuing it's flight, now in a new direction, towards the intended target - the 10th green. John made his par and, unbelievably only one of the guys stood in the window was even aware how close they had come to serious injury. Strong beer in Berlin in those days...

I tipped the Goose & Toms, Toms played v well but had a v poor finish.

Regarding blotting scorecards, i played in a competition at Pavenham Park last year, i was marking a fella's card (stableford), he said he was an 18 handicapper but struggling, well he scored 5 points on front 9 and 3 on the back 9! Think he must've been in region of 120 on his card. I think if he'd tried to throw his clubs in the lake at the end of the round, he would've missed the lake!!

Before the event kicked off, Tiger suggested the winner being at +4/5 and Vijay must have been drinking for a while when he suggested +10!
Although the course is difficult, the players were let off very lightly on the first day, therefore producing some very good scores. I was at the US open at Shinnecock Hills in 2004 where Retief Goosen won, and this week, the players have it far easier on the greens.

The sensible player this week will knock 2-irons and 5woods down fairways, to get it in play, therefore being able to control spin into greens, albeit hitting a longer club in.

People will say that Doughertys a*se will fall out this week with the pressure of leading the tournament after round 1, but with how he putted yesterday, if he can keep that up, im backing him all the way. Justin Rose however, showed us at Augusta in April and the back nine for his round yesterday, that he can't keep his sensible head on for long enough, however im sure his time will come shortly.

Come on Brits, bring it home!!

Im rather weary of both Furyk and Woods on +1. Chances are if one of them doesnt play well, the other will. I reckon today (friday) will give a new American leader (Woods, Furyk, Funk or Snedeker) and Rose and Doughtery will be in 2nd or 3rd. I reckon Ogilvy will drop out of contention.

My mum, when she was 11, was entered in a 9 hole competition at Trevose and my grandfather (always a stickler for the rules - still is at 95 years of age and playing daily at Gullane and Muirfield) counted every airshot my mum played during the nine holes...180 was the total on the score card.

Is that weary or wary? Anyway - Ballyclare, a beautiful par three on the back nine. Probably requires a pitching wedge or nine iron over a lake. This guy hits his tee shot in the lake. drops just short then proceeds to chip next two balls into the lake as well. Picks up bag and trolley and throws the whole lot in the lake and storms off leaving partners highly amused. Five minutes later appears back at the lakeside, wades in and retrieves golf bag. Pulls car keys out of the pocket and then picks the whole lot up again and throws it back in the lake. Leaves! Two or three hours later his wife appears at the lakeside and pulls the whole lot out again. I have always wondered what the conversation was like at the tea table that night - 'did you have a good game dear?' I think Tiger should strap his wrist up, he would probably win by 16 if he did!!!

The late starters will be shooting 75+ on the glassy spiked greens. No hiding place even for Woods.
Over par will be leading tonight.
Early starters like Furyk have a big advantage.

Surely Tony Jacklin was not the only good thing to come out of Scunthorpe?

Nice to see it mentioned again!!
